Interpreting casting codes

Hello All,

I noticed that there are some casting codes on both the gearbox and diff of my late NA8. Can anyone tell me what they mean, eg do they represent a particular manufacture date or something?

Michael, you may already know this, but the MX5 5 speed GB was made by Mazda, while the 6 speed was made by Aisin. Apparently the MX5 5 speed was know as the 'Type II' (nothing to do with TorSen). It was also apparently known as the 'Model M':

I doubt castings would indicate a date, more likely that a sticker would indicate that. Casting might indicate manufacturer & model of transmission.

it is common practise on mouldings that parts are coded for some traceability. Probably the same applies to castings but I also doubt that the information is of much interest ( if any) to an end user. On mouldings the most common methods are clocks to id dates but this info can also be fine tuned. Even things like globes are coded to shifts, dates and even plants where made. A lot of codes are also in house designed so interpreting them requires more info to understand what is defined. Most car parts do not require full traceability which can go back to specific info on batch control.
