Town and Country exhaust opinions!

Postby Mr nanotech » Sun Aug 14, 2011 3:24 pm

So after driving for a good year or so on a RS*R GT2 Exmag, I decided it was time for a change before I went deaf.
After looking all over the net, I made myself a list of possible exhausts. These ranged from Fujitsubo Giken Legalis, Flyin Miata, Racing Beat, Autoexe and so on...
Though after sending quite a few emails off, I was shocked to see the costs of shipping from the States. I know there are other places to find them but with the dollar so low there, it seemed right.
I was a little disheartened over this as I'd had my heart set on a certain muffler but I resolved that a reputable custom system would be fine. So off I went to do some research! It wasn't long before I noticed people were throwing the name Town and Country around a lot.
I'd been skeptical of custom exhausts after a bad experience I had in the past but after calling T&C and talking to the owner, I booked it in. To be honest, after driving with no muffler at all for about a week, I was ready to take anything.

So the following week a I dropped the car off. A couple of hours later I got a phone call regarding some concerns about my system, I wasn't sure what was going on so I swung by the shop and had a talk to the proprietor and PCMX5 (who happens to live like 3 streets away lol).
I was stunned that the owner had called me regarding the positioning of the CAT (another shop put on) and a few other things. I would have imagined a lot of shops would have just done the bare minimum and finished the job without saying anything but it was good to see some real quality assurance in practice!
I swear, etiquette feels like a thing of the past now so it was quite refreshing to see it!
About 20mins later the job was finished and I picked it up. To be honest I had no idea what to expect. I'd heard from a lot of people on this forum that they sounded great but after seeing the stock looking tip they'd put on, i was a little worried.
But after starting the car, wow  . It may have a stock size exhaust tip but it sure as hell didm't sound like a factory muffler!!!!
It's loud up high but pretty quiet down low for putting around the streets I found. Yet this spins me out, there is NO DRONE! None at all.

Visually, the system has a nice coat of fresh black paint with a stainless muffler and muffler tip. I'm still not sold on the exhaust tip that's been put on and I've been putting a lot of thought into taking it back and having it lopped off for a 1/2" bigger one but I'm going to leave it for now and see if it grows on me.
But I'm VERY impressed with how this thing sounds, it's actually burnt in a little and gotten deeper.
I'm not joking when I say this, but it sounds like a car from a video game now! Cheyne can testify to that

Now there is one puzzling part I can't work out. I'm thinking this has to do with increased back pressure, but the car has more throttle response down low now. Which is even more odd since usually louder cars give the illusion you're going faster, but this is SIGNIFICANTLY quieter than my old one!!!!

One thing I was VERY VERY VERY impressed with was when the shop called me a few hours after driving it home to see how I found the system and if I was happy with the job. Now I've had a lot of exhaust work done to the car since I bought it and not ONCE had a courtesy call.
I should at this point mention that customer service has always been a seller for me. I'm very critical of business/consumer relations and find this is the crucial corner stone of any shop or business in general. So for me to be impressed with T&C, then they're definitely on their game.

Town and Country Exhausts are open Monday to Saturday and can be contacted on (03) 5223 1350, and are located: 50 Fyans Street, South Geelong VIC 3220.

I recommend this place for anyone having any muffler work done on their car. If you live in Geelong or close by, feel free to PM me and take a look or listen to my new muffler and draw your own conclusions.

Hi Nanotech,

Really glad to hear (haha, i just made a joke!) that you like your new exhaust.

Peter (aka PCMX5) helped me spec out my custom exhaust as Town & Country dont do a pre-made exhaust to ship to other states. Peter is a top bloke who really really knows his stuff. If i lived near Town & Country i would have definitely got them to do my exhaust.

I'd be very wary off getting a bigger tip. I did, i choose a 3 inch one, which made it drone. I had it removed and replaced with a 2.25 inch tailpipe (same diameter as the system) and all was good. I really really like the way my exhaust sounds, and like yours, the sound just keeps improving the older it gets. It sounds very crisp and fruity, if you know what i mean, and gets deeper as the revs increase. You can pootle around at low revs and not attract any attention and also be able to listen to your music.

Cheers

AK

Yeah that was the thing I missed with the RSR, I almost forgot I had a stereo in the car. In a lot of ways I still miss the loud purr of a bigger system but not to live with.
I've heard that a bigger tip will increase drone so I'm not sure yet. I'm Looking at putting a 2.5" so it's only a 1/4" bigger or possible a bit more and aiming for 3" but like I said, I'm leaving it for a while. This one could grow on me but I do think the chrome slip on tips look a little tacky if that makes sense.
That said, I've definitely got no objections with sound! I love this thing at full throttle.

Thanks for the rap Alistair(Ak), should mention that i did not advise the fitting of the 3 inch tip as i have found that this is critical to the sound, even a rolled 2 1/4 inch tip sounds poor.

Great review Josh!(nanotech)

I think T&C needs to find a solution where the tip looks bigger but actually still runs at 21/4 so satisfying the dual requirements of sound and looks. Not that i am worried about their tip as fitted.

A far as back pressure is concerned i have no idea, the system has no baffles and really no scientific basis but has been develped after a fair bit of dyno testing that confirms it is as efficient and it sounds great QED!

Sorry Peter, i should have made it clear in my post that you advised me not to put a 3 inch tip on my exhaust as from your previous experience it might cause a drone. I went against your better judgement and went for a large tip but then replaced it.

Sorry to confuse you all but on my full T & C system I have a oval shaped chrome rolled tip that's 3 1/4'' x 2 3/4'' and it doesn't drone at all and sounds amazing and has all the performance gains of the normal T & C system using the standard sized tip. PCMX5 has heard and dríven my car and can attest to this. He was there when the system was fitted.

Hi pete,

glad you are still enjoying "toy".

Are you sure your car doesn't have a smaller diameter inside pipe? Can't remember what tip ended up on your car but know it sounded great and can still see the surprised look on your face when it went as well as it does!!

I had trouble with a larger tip on my car and AK certainly did so I still think it is worth erring on the side of a smaller tip.

i am going to try a tip that looks like it is about 3 1/2inch outside diameter but is actually 2 1/4 inside as I agree with nanotech that the staight tip is a bit underwhelming.

look forward to catching up on a run soon, perhaps the GOR run?

I have booked my car in this Friday for a T & C exhaust.

I am looking forward to it and the drive back home should sound great.

Hi Greg,

if you have no other plans I could pick you up and go for a coffee/bite to eat while the job is being done?

Cheers,

Peter

So have you actually booked in to change your tip Peter? I'd love to hear back from you about the sound of it! Otherwise I'll head in to see Collin and talk to him personally. Would be great to hear a testimonial first.
Also pricing!

josh, next week sometime.I am sure that this will not change the sound as the outlet is still the same, just that the tip looks physically bigger.
Will post the results,

Cheers,

Peter.

If you cut half the old tip off and replace it with a large one, chances are it will drone.

Just fitting a larger tip over the existing one (maybe painting it black) wont change the note.
