Andrew's '93 NA6 - KL V6 swap
Hey guys,
some of you may have seen my for sale ad for my R33 Skyline. Well, I managed to sell it a few weeks ago and since then I've been on the hunt for a cheap-ish NA6 to commute to uni and do a few track days. I FOUND ONE!
It's a 1993 NA-6 with A/C, power steering, electric windows, and completely stock. It's done 212,000 k's and still runs very well, though it has a stumble/miss around the 2,000 rpm mark.
First mod is a foam-ectomy on the seat to give me more than the -25mm headroom I have with the current arrangement. I have to slouch to fit under the roof and my head still pushes up the soft top
Anyway, just thought I'd introduce myself and hopefully I'll see a few of you at Wakefield park. I'm planning on heading up there a few times in the coming weeks to get a feel for the car.
Cheers,
Andrew

Re: Andrew's '93 NA6
Welcome Andrew. Hope to meet you at the next MX-5 Club trackday at Wakefield Park on 4th September.
You might want to try some new plug leads for that stumble.

Congrats, Andrew. Those wonky headlights should be easily adjusted to be flush again too. If you're at the next track day I might meet you then too.

Maad car man. Track day would be an excellent way to learn about your car.

Re: Andrew's '93 NA6
Cheers guys, (lol at that pic)
I've just discovered the rocker cover gasket is leaking looks like a trip to mx5mania for a replacement!
Is the roar from the engine supposed to be louder than the exhaust? Because it is WAY louder and sounds awesome.

Re: Andrew's '93 NA6
Yep, most of the noise in an NA6 is from the intake ... even on a stocker. I love it too.
Just noticed a few more things you might like to have a close look at:
Radiator might be getting near the end of it's life. The top and bottom tank starts out black and as the plastic degrades it changes to a light brown colour and then eventually white. It can crack and start leaking at the light brown stage. An aftermarket replacement is cheap as (mine was ~$180 at Mania).
With 212,000km on the clock, make sure the timing belt and waterpump were changed when they should have been (at 200,000km). If they weren't, then start saving for the job (ballpark $1000 to get it done properly).
When you replace the camcover gasket, make sure you correctly seal the little corners near the front. The guys at Mania can advise on what you should use.
The clear reflectors and side repeaters are probably not ADR compliant. If you're on your Ps, and therefore doing your best to avoid making yourself a cop magnet, it might be worth picking up some stockies.
Those budget Goodyears will be a lot of fun at Wakefield. Don't expect too much in the way of grip.
You might recover 25mm of headroom if you ditch those lovely sheepskin seat covers!
Love the peeling clearcoat on the doors (and rear quarter panel too?). It looks remarkably similar to mine!
... and even with all that, it looks like you've got yourself a nice little toy to play with. Have fun!

Re: Andrew's '93 NA6
Thanks for that Guran,
I think it's been in a small accident because the front bumper is not stock (that's why it's faded but the rest of the car is much better) and the panel gaps on the front of the car are a bit out of whack. When I go to replace the radiator I'll take off the bumper and see what's what under the body, hopefully it won't be too bad. The car tracks perfectly and there's nothing wrong with the body from the front guards back so I think it will be OK.
I can't really complain since the car was $3,600 with 3 full months rego Its build date is 7/1993 so I think that makes it one of the last NA6's made?
Cheers,
Andrew

Welcome to the obsession
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Re: Andrew's '93 NA6
Hehe, thanks.
I did get the o-ring while I was there, that seems to be where it's leaking the most but it's also leaking around the spark plugs so I definitely needed the cam cover gasket. That's tomorrows job, along with changing the diff and gearbox oil. What should I torque the cam cover bolts to?
Today I cut some foam out of the seat base and I now fit comfortably under the soft top, which is awesome. I removed the back panel but it makes the seat really uncomfortable so I put it back in. I also had a great drive to MX5 Mania down Galston gorge. What a fantastic car
Cheers,
Andrew

Re: Andrew's '93 NA6
Thanks guys, I was really happy with the price.
What do you think of the new exhaust (basically just a rear muffler delete, totally reversible)? I think it's a bit too loud, lol.
