Few questions

Postby slimx » Thu Jul 28, 2011 7:06 am

Ok i got a Series II NB

Question 1. COWL INTAKE how the F*** to do it with ABS (and the stupid washer bottle)
I want to make my own "cowl-style" intake.. How do i do it??
Whats the best way.
I will be using, stock intake piping to start off, heat shielded pod filter, and then a flexible hose. and .well.. whatever else i need after that.

atm my setup is just stock pipe, air filter, flexible hose that goes below the PASSENGER headlight into that hole where the wheel is.
---
Question 2. Increasing throttle reponse time

Ive owned this mx5 for a while now, after putting an exhaust on and changing the air intake, i realised i did increase the response time a little and it did help me enjoy the car as much as i enjoyed my old HONDA :)

How ELSE would i go about (light mods only) increasing the response time, i did some research before posting and it seems to me that shorter your intake is .. FASTER your throttle response is?

How would i shorten the intake and still get cold air though?
Would it be a good idea to .. put the pod filter AND then run the intake tubing? i dont think it'll fit but im sure you can buy smaller pod filters...?

----------
Question 3. Wheel spin (whilst shifting)

I like it.. so i dont care about opinions my only question is .. what can i do to get BETTER Wheel spin atm i can JUST barely get it 1st - 2nd. Double Clutch can get it.. again.
Other cars, if you accelerate WHILST you depress the clutch shift and let go .. YOUR garunteed wheel spin it seems the mx5 is not.

Most cars that get good wheel spin seem to have a HD clutch, does this help? Or .. am i chasing ..rainbows

smaller/bad tires or more torque, but both of these will put you into a tree.

I have no trouble spinning my tyres launching in 2nd. :P

More power, higher revs, crappier tyres, more/less tyre pressure, less grippy surface. Decrease friction or increase torque.

No for throttle response you want maximum volume between the filter and throttle body. Not the other way around. Buy an arc inlet chamber.

Wheelspin, get a drift clutch. And a blower and use plastic tyres.

I normally have a pretty hard time launching at my local hillclimb without spinning the wheels.

Hence trying the 2nd gear launch. Got me going with a minimal fuss. But lit the tyres up easily in 2nd on the burnout pad.

Not burnouts, he wants to drop it into second and chirp so everyone thinks hes hard.

My car will break into wheelspin at 4,000 RPM when accelerating hard.
Even if I take off easily in first then floor it, when it gets to 4K, the wheels start to spin.
I've had some very surprised and frighteneing looks from passengers when I do this to them for the first time too. :D

Mind you, my car is turboed.

If your looking for better throttle response/ acceleration and would like to be able to produce more wheelspin with the limited power that the mx5 holds naturally... Then I would reccomend a lightwight flywheel + HD clutch upgrade. This is not the cheapest nor the easiest option but from personal experience it will deliver pretty much exactly what you have explained - whether you have bald tires or not wheelspin is easily achieved and the car will accelerate moderately harder up the rev range in the first 3 gears.

On a more simplified note: have you checked the tention on your throttle cable? Lol.

Flat changing might also help your problem.

The rev limiter will stop the engine from overrevving.
