Torn inner cv boot....what options?

Postby Mxbob » Thu Jul 28, 2011 1:05 am

Hey all, as I get to know my 5 I'm finding a handful of things that need sorting.
Just noticed that the inner cv joint on the axle has split ANC making a pretty line of grease everywhere. On the positive side, there us still grease coming out so looks like a new split. I have not checked thr other boots but the cars an 89 so I'm not hoping for much.
Soooo do I replace the boot (looks like a ballache of a job) or should I look at replacing the shaft with boots. Or maybe the whole axle :)
Any tips on an easy cv boot replacement?

At home...

-Jack rear up.
-Remove wheel
-Undo cv axle nut (the 30mm one)
-Remove outer upper arm/hub bolt
-Remove outer lower arm/hub bolt
-Remove hub
-Place clean tray under diff
-Remove CV shaft
-Cut off cv boot
-Clean completely without dissassembling
-Remove shaft but be super careful to keep inner ball race aimed straight after the shaft is out so balls dont fall out, because experienced people can take half hour getting it back together
-Replace boot
-Pack with supplied grease
-Reassemble
-Put collected diff fluid back in

Or pay a mechanic 60 bucks to do it, he has a tool that stretches the boot over the shaft with little dissassembly.

Thanks dan. I like doing a bit of spanner work but 60 notes in labour sounds like money well spent. I'll get a quote or two ;)
