My parts prices are not crazy aggressive. People on this forum like to pay big money for brand name blingy parts, that doesnt mean I exagerate prices, it means they pay far too much. :P

For example. many would argue that 1000 for a full torsen conversion for an na would be aggressively low but I paid 650 delivered to newcastle from sydney, and based on my advice 'spikes' is about to pay under 800 for his. just because mania wants 1350 doesnt mean half that is an unrealistically low price.

Its like the cheapest way to boost thread. people said my example was incomplete because most people would think that at bov is a necessary part for a COMPLETE setup. well it isnt. It just isnt. and if you want one go buy a bosch one off a saab for 30 dollars. they work great.

How is asking for mild steel and press bends not ok? I have an ae86 and a stroked n13 rally car, both have mild steel, press bent systems, both win trophies, wheres the problem?

Im just saying that these prices are completely doable and that expensive parts are not necessarily better, in fact many times expensive parts are much worse than what can be made at home.

And cams costing 600-900, for some mild street grinds to suit the rest of this mild work? thats because your getting ripped off.

It is ok, and no problem if you are chasing the cheapest/nastiest, short life way to do it. In addition, it isn't even the best option - who knows, maybe you'd win 6% more trophies too http://www.bobsmuffler.com/muffler_myths.htm

Ha hehehe :)

Theres a reason I suggested 2 and 1/4.

You can have a 2 inch mandrel system, or a 2 and 1/4 press bent.
Same flow.

Liam had his 1990 na6 here the other day and it JUST dropped a baffle in the muffler. at 21 years old. Isnt that long enough life for a press bent mild steel exhaust?

Mostly my inbox is being flooded by the subscription emails, so i come to have a peek. It's good that there's a serious discussion about it. Getting both sides of the issues benefits me :D

I didnt realise there was 2 sides :P

It seems we all agree you need a good flowing exhaust and intake. To begin with.
Its up to you if you want to pay heaps for one that doesnt necessarily work well or if you are happy to pay less for something built to your specs, to suit your needs, but may not come with a big japanese brand name.

I'm with Dann regarding the exhaust. I had a 2.25 inch press bent cat back, mild steel exhaust custom fitted to my NA by an exhaust specialist. It's got a 12 inch perforated resonator and a hi-flow muffler by Lukey Walker. Perfect fitment because it's all custom made, no rattles or problems. Sounds great, no drones and the car goes better and all for $400 (without a chrome tip).

I did have a 3 inch chrome tip fitted by them (an extra $50) but it caused the exhaust to drone, so i had to pay them again to take it off
I was amazed a larger tip could cause a drone but believe me it did on my exhaust!

Cheers

If you read nanotechs build thread pages 12/13(i think) youll see him and a few of RS*R exhaust(brand name, ?800 dollars?) owners complaining about excessive droning. I told him to remove the big tip. He laughed saying that he wasnt going to cut the tip off his rs*r. But it would solve the problem.

A great example that expensive brand name isnt necessarily the best.

If you bought an exhaust of a shop asking for no droning and it droned the exhaust shop would have to just fix it. You cant beat that.

Factory exhaust was stainless to the best of my knowledge.

What's a VRS kit?

$80 for a head shave? That's less than the cost of the head gasket you would be up for...

Megasquirt admittedly cheap but a bit of work to install and lots of time to tune well.

Valve
Regrind
Set

Includes head gasket and seals etc necessary to replace when you remove and refit a head.

A head shave IS 80 dollars.

Rebores are normally only 40-60 a hole.

PS: PM me and bring a case of Crownies, ill tune your MS. :P

HI Ak,
you should also mention that you car had had a replacement ceramic cat. fitted before you got it because there is not much doubt that most 10 year old cats are not as efficient as they were when new and anything you did after the cat. maybe compromised.

yes Matty is right SS exhaust OE.

Just get a cat off something like a BA xr6 from a wreckers for 50 bucks. If that doesnt flow enough or isnt cheap enough I dont know what is.

Ive never had a close enough look to say definitively to be honest. If they take air from the radiator area, id say they arent bad. If they take air from the bumper/bonnet gap no way. Thats a super low pressure zone and is sucking air out of the engine. If they take air from the radiator but the bonnet gap isnt sealed with something better than the stock seal, id say they are poorly designed.

They seem to me to be like the mania setup, perhaps better than stock but in no way designed for maximum performance.
