NB8B 6speed "feel"
Hello there,
This probably wont make sense though, here goes.
Has anyone been changing gears and doesn't want to rush it in too quick to avoid that click noise so when shifting the gear and it's just about to go in, it kinda feels like the lever pulsates 2-3 times then gear goes in smoothly and quietly? This doesn't happen every time and mainly 3rd and rarely 2nd.
Got me thinking as 2nd and 3rd are the most notchy gears when cold so maybe something happening?
anyways thanks for insight

I dud find my gears notchy when cold but the guys at Mania suggested I switch to Redline, and it's been much better even on freezing mornings!

I've been wanting to switch to Redline for a while. You using MT90?
How much do you need to use for a full oil replacement? I only ask as it comes in two bottle sizes. One sounds too little, the other sounds too much lol.

Re: NB8B 6speed "feel"
yep 2L of oil for 5sp, 1.8L for 6sp.
i've been wanting to switch to either redline or royal purple oil... redline seems to have a good rep on here.
i'm running castrol syntrax which seems to have turned to jelly this winter.
aye viper, give me a shout if you are keen on getting both cars in the air for a dual gear oil change. should be a hair under $50 each if we split a 4qt bottle, which should be enough.

Re: NB8B 6speed "feel"
so how come many of us have no problem at all with gear changes on 6 spd without needing to use Redline?

Re: NB8B 6speed "feel"
It's possible that Mazda changed the type of oil it used between productions, or there were differences in the production of the gearboxes themselves.
Or that the people do have the problem, but don't know any better.

Re: NB8B 6speed "feel"
Mine has the standard cold secong gear click.
How about we do this to get a good idea on oils....?
Oil: Castrol manual syntrax 75w90
Cost of oil: $70 for 2x1L bottles at repco
Cold- Crunches into: 2nd only, clicks when you snap it in fast
Hot- Crunches into: None
KM on gearbox : <100,000
Abuse: regular 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th clutch dumps and kicks at or near the limiter.
Hows that to get some data easily?

Because...the synchros may be more worn?

Re: NB8B 6speed "feel"
Not just synchros but small manufacturing or shiming differences will do it.

Re: NB8B 6speed "feel"
It's also the speed you're shifting and the amount of torque/rpms while you shift obviously.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Re: NB8B 6speed "feel"
When you shift, the clutch is in, zero torque. The issue apart from the actual box internals is like you said rpm, but also its the amount your motor mounts move as the clutch goes in and the engine/box twists back straight.

Re: NB8B 6speed "feel"
My 6 speed is super stiff in 1st and 2nd for the first minute on a cold morning then is slick. By the time I've made it around the corner it's good to go.
In summer it's good straight away.
Castrol MT90.
