Are All NB Diff carriers/housings the same ?

Postby selaga » Fri Jul 22, 2011 4:27 pm

I broke a diff housing on my 2004 SE, and wanted to know if all NB's have the same housings ?

Also do TORSEN's need special oil/friction modifiers like normal LSD ?

Advice is much appreciated.

Cheers,

Sel

Hi Sel,
Unfortunately, you must get another SE diff housing if you wish to continue using the large diameter splines of the SE axles. Click here for reference post from MT.net.

In order words, other non-SE housings will not be able to accomodate the axles you have on there.

Hope this helps you.

Thanks Les,

I just bought one from MX5Plus on AJ's advice, looks like I will have a carrier that I cannot use. :(

It looks like they are cast alloy, has anyone had any luck in getting them welded ?

Cheers,

Sel

MX5_DriftFury advised me last year to use an LSD compatible oil in the NA TorSen 1, but not in the NB TorSen 2.

Sel,

I would have to disagree with Les here. I recently installed the SE diff and axles into a standard NB8A diff carrier with no problems.

The SE axles do have a thicker splined section (around 1.4 mm larger OD), but the machined surface that the axle seals run on is the same diameter as the standard axles. The part number for the axle seals for SE and standard NB are also the same.

Long story short, the new carrier you bought will be fine

Any queries, let me know.

Russell

Russell,

You confirmed what the parts manual/numbers is/are saying. MX5+ only charged me $220 delivered to Sydney, so I got out of it fairly cheeply (new carrier is $2500 ex tax, plus 6 weeks ex Japan), probably another $250 for labor, so not too bad in the end.

Cheers,

Les, no dramas.............I re-read the MT.net spiel and the information is correct, i.e. axles and diff both need to be from SE to work, other combinations will not.No mention of the diff carrier though, however a few members have confirmed now that they are the same.

Cheers,

Sel

I would be interested to know the diameter and the amount of splines you found in the diff. 1.4mm larger doesn't sound like anything else I have ever come across.

Duane,

Dont quote me on the 1.4 mm being exact, but it was around that amount. Next time I have an axle out, I will measure the OD accurately and count the splines.

OK, here is what was found.....

spline count = 28

Halfshaft = d24mm
Outer CV joint hashed area (in between the splines and the seal flange) = d30mm
Outer CV joint spline area = d30mm

Standard 1.8 carrier/housing = SE carrier/housing.
Standard 1.8 axle seals = SE axle seals.

Hope that help you guys out.

I will measure the set of standard NB8B axles I have in the shed tommorow and post the measurements as a comparison.

The SE comes from the factory with a Torsen 2 LSD, 3.63 ratio.
