Why doesn't my gloss paint look glossy?

you sure read some strange things on this forum like removing tyres with a crowbar.- mein got. I suppose you can cut your chips with an angle grinder as well. As a young bloke I changed tyres with the old methods- tyre levers rubber mallets soap etc and it is one cow of a job and there are techniques almost no one can teach you now. You want tyres removed you take it to a tyre fitter- easy cheap and repeatable. You can take them down 2 at a time and paint the rims progressively.

Progress! I had to wait for summer sadly, so this took ages....

It looks ok in pics but needs more work. When the paint cures it's going to need another sand and several more top coats before I'm happy with the finish.
Up close there are some inconsistent patches from where I missed sanding.
Discovered the hard way that: Hot day + CBF mood = Do not attempt paint prep. I'll be going over it in a couple of days with 800 wet and dry and then 1200 wet and dry and lightly sand it back until it's smooth like glass (actually put more time into prep and not rush), then apply several top coats.

It looks good from a few meters (ie: the photo) but up close it's just not a consistent finish. But we learn from my mistakes and that's what DIY projects are all about. So I'm not upset, I'm learning what NOT to do in future

Either way this looks a lot better than my crappy matte finish.

Sorry I just got onto your post Nanotech. The way I get a top finish out of a can is once you've got the paint on leave it for at least two days to partly cure. It will probably have orange peel finish but dont worry - then hit it with about 800 wet and follow up with 2000 until it is dull - not just the orange peel tops. Then get to it with Brasso and polish it to a shine. The following week you can polish it with car polish. This is the process used by many restorers and it works fine.
