Oh and as a bonus question. I'm planning to sand back wheels and spray them gloss white now. What steps should I take in prepping them? I've painted wheels matte white before but gloss seems to be a whole new kettle of fish lol!

This is the exact paint youve used, although out of a gun. Same colour brand and everything. This is before cutting, notice mines nicer than yours because I put down a very very heavy very wet layer on the last layer. It nees to be so wet it is just about to run.

Its hard to do acrylic. And no its never glossy straight out of the can unless your pro. As has been said, it dries so fast that it doesnt run and form a complete panel worth of surface tension to pull it into a nice glass smooth perfectly still water gloss finish.

I had to wet rub mine with 1200 and then use a heavy cutting compound then some good polish.

After polish..

Yes its wet but look at the reflection on the guard for example.

Yeah you use a thin rope, but be very gentle you dont break the rubber.it will crack the paint after you remove it but that join will be hidden by the rubber.

Or you can remove the rubber but leave the window glued in and replace with new rubber.

Bonus answer, rub them bare, etch prime, prime, 800, paint a layer, 1200, paint it on wet as you can get, polish like hell.

Or just buy 2 pac and F your health.

Well thats a tough one, the rope/string idea sound pretty good but id wait till its fully dry before doing anything, otherwise you could mask up your windscreen and rubbers and attempt to slide something infront of where you're painting between the rubber and pillar to lift the rubber out enough to paint inside there and slowly work your way round, letting the rubber slide back into place while its still wet because it should only smudge on places you cant see anyway, may not work though, can't say i've ever been asked that before, automotive is only part of what I do so i'm not all knowledgable.

Any tips for painting with tyres on the wheels? I tried deflating them a little the first time, then trying to tape under but it just didn't work. tape wouldn't stick to the tyre. So Instead I tried a more ghetto approach and put the wheels in garbage bags then traced around the lip of the rim with a stanley knife, cutting out a circle. Then putting vasolene on the tyre to make the garbage bag stick and also to prevent paint sticking to the tyre.
It worked pretty well but only because overspray was black.

This time I'm going to be painting white so I need something more precise. I've seen a trick people have used where they buy a cheap deck of playing cards and stick each card between the wheel and tyre until it's completely surrounded like a bowl. That way you just spray whats' inside the bowl of cards you made.

^^^^^ Kinda like that!
Any methods you guys have used?

If you dont take the tyres off, your giving yourself a big external edge where the paint can start flaking from.

You COULD possibly try making up a design in paper similar to the garbage bag idea.

My first thought was to work out the radius of the wheels, then use a bigger compass to get a perfect circle in the paper. Cut the hole out, then put it over the tyres.

If you got it spot on it would probably meet just behind the lip of the wheels there.

You may still get a little bit of overspray, but it would mask up quite a bit of them. I'm thinking a heavier bond of paper so it's still flexible, but won't tear and will sit quite firm.

Just a thought. No guarantees it would work. :-D

You really want to do it that way use construction paper/carbdoardy sheets of colour stuff....... wow that came out good...haha, man Im going to leave that there for peoples entertainment.

You know the big A1 sized cardboard sheets that come in every colour at newsagents, it would be stiff enough that you could use a spare wheel to draw the circle, cut it out, cut it so its no longer complete, use the cut to tighten it under the edge of the rim and then tape it.

The simple way to mask the rims is to buy glossy board ( card) from a craft shop - cut long strips and secure the ends either with a paper clip or masking tape. The strip will easily stay in place around the rim- it acts like a fence/ barrier. There is no need then to try and mask accurately to the tyres. Another way to create a permanent mask is cut strips from light metal sheet but you may need access to a brake press or a local press metal supplier with offcuts to get a clean straight edge. The glossy board works. This method is a known one.

Sure removing the tyres is better but not as convenient.

Not sure how to quote multiple people so I'll do this the old fashioned way!

Dann:
I'd love to take the tyres off but the problem lays in the fact that I don't have the equipment to actually do it and nor do I have the money to take the car somewhere to have them done properly. It doesn't help that these are my only set of wheels and I'm not about to put my car on bricks while I strip all four tyres off my wheels to spray them.

Joe:
That will probably be the plan, I'll go mental with tape like when I did the pillars!

Pam:
I tried a similar idea to that the first time. I traced the wheel onto the side of a carboard box and laid it over the top of the wheel so only the rim was showing but the box was pretty dodgey so it didn't work out so well. I might try it with card or something

Morlock:
The metal stuff might be a bit extreme but it's a good idea. I'll hunt for some card next time I'm in town!

I am in the process of repraying mine, I took the tyres of mine in my backyard and cost me $0.00

You want the tyres off your your primer will bubble, also oven cleaner is great for getting off burnt in brake dust.
Make sure you take off all the weights and sticky crap from inside the rim as it will contaminate your paint too. It took me all up about 2hours to prep for primer.. lots of cleaning and make sure you have a heap of sand paper.
