NitroDann's Long Awaited Garage Thread
Hey guys,
So I finally decided to put one up.
Im not a huge photo documenter so I wont have heaps of photos of everything but ill do my best.
Straight to it,
I bought the car 2 years ago off a bloke called Qidi in melbourne, I had 10 grand in the bank and a one way plane ticket to melbourne, and 2 cars in mind.
An na6 that looked jdm as f*uck in the photos, but I was told was rough IRL. And a series 2 rx7 with mint paint and a full series 5 swap with an extend bridgeported 13b and 51mm webers.
I took the mx5, and the photos go something like this..
I must point out that im pretty sure the photos are heavily shopped as it NEVER looked this clean or paint flake free in real life.
It was a mostly stock na6. It had a very nice cat back, a pod filter, HKS hippermaxxIII coilovers, whiteline sways and the gorgeous SSR professors, but they are 16s ( ).
I drove it the long way back from melbourne and by the time I got back teh diff was so noisy, the PO had replaced all the fluids to sell it and put gearbox fluid in the diff and it was rooted.
So I kept it pretty well like that for ages only changing wheels and suspension alignment and removing a bit of the heavy stuff.
Then I got hit by a 4x4 and it needed repairs.
Heres some photos where you can see the damage, some are at the local hillclimb track, some at bullahdelah hillclimb.
Local track, also this cheeky photo of my stroked n13 pulsar club car, yes thats 2nd gear smoke downhill both front tyres.
Bullahdelah
So it was about time for some mods, so I bought an engine and gearbox and diff package ready to go. It was 5000km old and built by the owner of an engine shop for his personal car.
Its a b6 with the following,
Fully balanced bottom end (some crazy number like 22 hours balancing)
acl race series everything,
275 degree custom Wagget cams, 12mm lift,
solid lifters,
HEAVILY ported head with +1 stainless valves,
10.5:1 compression,
adjustable cam gears,
1.8 shaved flywheel with an exedy brass button 4 puck clutch,
6 speed, supposedly SE, like it matters, gearbox,
With an older model Link ecu. some nice 4-2-1 extractors as well.
I also got a 1.6 lsd with it, but that died in months like my other 3 1.6 diffs have done.
So with the money I got to repair my car from the 4x4 driver who hit me, I bought stuff for it.
I bought a 4.1 torsen with driveshafts and tailshaft, I bought an intercooler, a Garret gt2554, along with other goodies, though i must add that the car is NOT turbo at the moment, just the rest of it.
Ive made a cowl style intake for it which is VERY effective, along with homemade engine mounts, toyota individual coil over plugs (the type with no leads just 4 big powerful coils straight on each plug) some big 550cc injectors along with as far as I know, the only E85 conversion on an mx5 in australia. Along with many other things that results in a 0-100 time around 6 seconds flat. a few tenths into the 5s on a good day.
The computer got an afm delete and Ive wired up a 2 step launch control setup, along with flat shifting.
The car also has quite a few braces welded in an this lists of parts are not on the car.
NO...
air con
Power steering,
heater has been back in for winter, but hasnt worked so its out this week,
fan,
accessories
stereo
carpet
boot lining and all carpet
all heat shields except for manifold and intake shields, very necessary for good power those are,
carpet,
sound deadening
airbox
wiring that wasnt needed after removal of other things and ecu upgrade,
inner guards
softtop
all windows including hardtop window, except quarter windows and windshield,
also all of the window winder and motor parts
The covers around the lights,
and the inner bumpers, under the front and rear bars.
Engine fans.
The car has an extensively ducted stock radiator which works extremely well
And as you would have seen in my other thread its also recently been painted by me.
Heres a photo of the paintjob,
And finally engine bay photos,
Its currently run out of rego, so its getting a few things,
All new seals and gaskets, cos I can and its got a couple leaks, all new fluyids, new brake pads, some brake ducting, and some second hand but full of tread dunlop d03's so I will be out at the track again soon!
CANNOT WAIT !
Updates to come.

I want your coils.. Can you spot a part number on them??
hopefully i can get them cheaper than these ones.. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SplitFire-Coil-Packs-Mazda-MX5-1-6L-BP-ZE-B6-ZE-/220754848331

I wondered if and when this thread was going to happen. This car is an insane amount of fun.

LOL Dann, if it wasn't for the fact that you've listed all the mods done to the engine (and surrounding), I don't think people would have known from just staring down the bonnet... a true sleeper indeed!

Here you go.
These are available off many toyotas and lexus'with different rubber seals and lengths but the coils are the same, so although these coils came from a corolla (which happen to be the right length exactly) they are the same is late model lexus 2JZ (NO SH!T ) coils.
They are not plug and play, although the loom I made IS.
If you are interested, ive considered producing plug and play toyota cops looms for na6's. Not sure on cost, give me a week to ring around and decide if Ill use a modified and extensively cut toyota loom, or just make my own. Interested?
Also as it is plug and play if anybody is near me or at a clubday im at I can swap these into your car for you to test in just 5 mins.

Re: NitroDann's Long Awaited Garage Thread
Looks great Dann.
I would love to give this a go?
To make it plug and play what is needed?
I have a old coil pack with connector plug, would that help so it is just a matter of plugging it in??
Can you use a standard ECU?

These were taken a couple months ago when my thread was active... this one...
http://www.mx5cartalk.com/forum/viewtop ... =humongous
So the ducting is not quite exactly like this....or the bumper. but damned close and gives you an idea what achievable in a totally legal and stealth way.
The top part is to seal the gap ABOVE the radiator, so its completely sealed and no airflow (or specifically pressure) can escape. As you can see the bottom is made of an old for sale sign (core flute) because it is weak enough to tear off if it gets caught on something without damaging anything else. It bolts to the front bumper opening.
This is looking in from the front wheel well. The very left edge of the aluminium panel is where the radiator is, its slightly bent to wrap around the edges of the rad as you can see.
This is the other side and it is the same as you can see but this photo might be easier to understand also.
Its especially important to note how the aluminium side panels are (almost..) the exact shape of the inside of the bumper and chassis rails to seal it all of nicely.

Not so sure about what you mean with your sentence construction haha.
How many of the toyota coils do you have? do they all fit nicely onto the plug and into the cam cover holes?
If you google youll find a fair bit but I can explain the specifics if you want?
As you can see my setup works perfect and also looks almost factory so im still keen to make some for anyone not so keen on the electronics side of things.

Re: NitroDann's Long Awaited Garage Thread
Yeah, wow i kind of did a ninja edit.
I could blame my tablet but thats just an excuse.
I meant, how do you make it plug and play?
If you can build one that works on a standard ECU, i would be very interested to buy one from you.
I have an old Coilpack that had cracks in one of the coils that i used a bit of resin to stop it sparking till i bought a new one.
Would i need to use the wiring connector from that to make the COP Plug and Play?

Re: NitroDann's Long Awaited Garage Thread
The best way to make the cops plug and play by far is to gut the standard ignitor and use it as a plug, because of course it runs straight to the ecu and back to the factory coils.
it has 8 pins and 8 wires, 4 go to the coils and 4 to the ecu, you use the four to the ecu to connect to a coils, run the wires straight out the back to turn it into a plug and straight to the toyota coils.
So you need a spare ignitor, dead or alive, 4 toyota coils and the coil clips to make it plug and play.
Although I should add that the toyota coils are best when dwelled at 2.5 ms and the factory will dwell them for longer giving you more spark but a harder time at low rpm. Im running mine at 4ms as my ecu wont go any lower and they are just fine though.

Re: NitroDann's Long Awaited Garage Thread
So...
I decided to add a little more about it.
Thought Id show you my shift light as everyone in the passenger seat seems to really like it.
Its triggered by the Link ECU and is very easy to wire up. You can wire this up with almost any aftermarket ecu and all the work is very easy diy stuff. I had never seen this done so I thought what a great idea and its SOOOO stealth, anyone who wouldnt like it (cops..rego man..etc..) would never see it as they wont hit 8000rpm to activate it
HAVE A GOOD SEARCH BEFORE YOU SCROLL DOWN TO THE OTHER PHOTOS.
Nice right??
Its the highest intensity regular red 5mm led, so it takes no current to run it and its so dam bright you cant miss it, its so bright at night the whole interior glows red and when its on you you look like an alien your face is so red.

Thanks spikes, seems that jeo was right about people wanting to read this.
This thread got almost a hit per minute in the first hour and 4 hours later was well past 100 hits. Turns out everyone wanted to know if I was talking out my ass every time I post. Guess you all now know
