Said it needs to be extended, unless you're saying there's enough factory MAF wiring standard to extend to the area between the throttle body & the area behind the driver's side headlight on a RHD. There certainly isn't on all MX5s.

The wiring is not a big issue whether you use existing or extend it.
Does anyone think cutting a hole behind the headlight to match the one on the hotside is not a good idea. :?:

That is, aside from the pain of carefully grinding/cutting a hole to match the other one, I thought it might contribute to a CAI coldside.

I'm with Dann, why the hell not. Symetrical holes in the same position, only one is on the coldside.

I want to do it and I don't see any reason not to. :?:

In the absence elaboration from Sliq on reason/s, it sounds like you've already made up your mind & aren't worried about potential illegality (depending on jurisdiction), which may or may not be well founded.

Cutting the hole aside, according to forumites that have shortened the overall intake length by doing away with the engine crosspipe & fitting a pod filter & MAF to an adaptor which attaches to the throttle body, there's improved responsiveness, but loss of torque. May be try this first to see what you think before going further.

recall reading something about the loss of torque as there is less "air volume" though then what about the super exxy autoexe intake soley on the cold side????

after looking into all this it all just seems to much effort for minor gain might as well just get a turbo kit OR supercharger kit if you want a "real" gain.

Imagine it's similarly affected, but some have been happy with the improved response, & I think top end, so depends what you want.

My intake was cheap as it comes and makes half a pound of boost at just 50kph. WELL worth it for 30 bucks.

1. Possibly, plenty of opinions by people who love their coldside CAI.

2. Right, Super exxy Autoexe uses only headlight air (It does isolate the filter from engine air so is true CAI - see Dann's main point)

3.I wanted opinion if there was anything important under and behind the RHS headlight (Oh no, don't cut there, a massive steering component..) I cant believe I am the first to think of it. :?:

4. Am waiting on a OBD scan guage so I can measure intake temps before and after each change.

5. If it all cocks up then its back to stock and I have had a bit of fun. Total cost about $50, and maybe a small hole behind the headlight, trivial :evil:

I think there's actually a larger gap behind the NB8B headlights and the NB8A on the hot-side. I remember Irwin8er had more trouble getting room for his CAI than I did and we compared the cars side by side at the time. That was over 4 years ago though so I can't remember specifics anymore. He wound up skipping the gap behind the headlight and just running piping down along the chassis rails to the wheel well for a pick-up. My CAI uses a 2.5" rubber intake off 87 JE camira down past the headlight to a PVC elbow on the foglight hole. That then runs into a sealed box with a modified K&N typhoon intake pipe run into with the K&N pod filter. I know when it was sealed perfectly it ripped out two self-tappers due to the air pressure so I wound up gaffa taping the whole lid as a quick-fix at the track....then kept putting off doing it properly as it'll need to be re-designed for the turbo anyway. For me though the rubber sealing around the K&N intake has gone too hard and opened up a gap now.... so my pressure should be down.

The hole is behind/under the headlight, here's a little picture which gives a better idea but to show you properly will have to wait until the weekend.
