Should and Shouldn't do(s) with turbo cars

Hey guys,

I'm just wondering what are some of the things that you should/shouldn't do with turbo cars.

I.e. avoid short trips where you're turning the engine on and off within a short period of time?

Just want to make sure the new car gets some TLC ;)

Ccan you install a turbo timer (i think thats the name) ,so it will run for a few mins after ignition is switched off.

*Illegal...? in NSW anyways.

I've already started developing the habit of letting the car sit in idle for a while after I've parked the car but I'm wondering whether there are anything else that I should know/do?

Oh it's illegal, is that for aftermarket kits or factory assembled turbos (or both)

I know my brothers MY99 Wrx has a turbo timer, but perhaps it is illegal for him also.

The things you learn

I even let my car idle for 10-30 secs after each run.

Its illegal to have a running car but for it to not be under your control. Inc t timers.

So long as you dont boost for a couple of minutes before shutting down its fine, whether by idling or doing a cool down lap.

Take the rear muffler off so you baby it home the last 2 blocks and your parents don't hear you and complain

That's enough, oh and keep your oil changes to regular intervals.

I've heard horror stories with after market turbo timers on auto cars, ie. getting stuck in gear and not being able to shut the engine off!

are GTR skylines not factory TURBO TIMER ??? lol

I really dont think its illegal or its only legal if its wired a certain way probably. Everyone in my area has a turbo timer.. People i know who have been red labelled didn't even have the turbo timer in there list of defects.

I think someone should double check this.

Mate, i think you're over-analysing this. The car's managed to get to 140k kms quite fine without a timer and with a new turbo now, you'll be fine for another 140k.

Just enjoy the car and make sure you keep the revs under 4000rpm at all times and you'll be fine...

Don't run too much boost, don't shut the car down while the turbo is red hot.

Thanks Okibi for the first piece of comment relevant to the topic :lol:

It currently has a boost gauge, do you think it would be worthwhile to invest in other gauges like a temperature gauge???... (since the one that comes stock is practically useless)

If you're going to splash for gauges try and get some with "peak hold" if you can afford them. Going flat out on a track you might not be able to watch for boost spikes or the temperature jumping up until you're doing your cool down lap. Might give you enough not to damage anything.

Seriously though, if I'm not going to be tracking this, do I really need to invest in other gauges as preventative measures?

Your car is practically stock so even the boost guage is just for show. Does the stock guage opperate correctly? If so it will be just as useful to you as any one will. As for boost, they have boost cut for a reason, your safe to run up to boost cut. And yeah as said just dont stop it within 2 minutes of a couple long hard pulls.
