replacing the h4 headlight bulbs in an NA6

Hi All
new the whole mx5/Mazda scene and just wanna how how i would change the bulbs in the mx5 (NA6)? I had a quick look after washing the car on the weekend but just want to make sure im doing it all right.

Is there a link or something or is it as easy as ABC?

Please help!

Ok, so assuming you have a Mazda imported MX-5 and not a personal import/Eunos Roadseter (they can have sealed beams).

Raise the headlights (push button in dash above radio)
Remove the black plastic surrounds from each headlight (2 or 3 screws each side)
you should now have access to a black metal ring that retains the headlights.
There are 3 small screws that should be loosened (not removed).
Once the screws are loose you should be able to rotate the ring slightly, lining up the 3 screws with holes that allow the headlight to be removed.

With the headlight in your hand you will need to take the electrical connection off the back. You will need to press/squeeze in a retaining clip (been a while since I have had to do this) to release the connection.

With the electrical connection off you can remove the rubber dust/water boot. Note how it was mounted so you can return it to its original position.

You should now see the H4 bulb, it is held in by a spring loaded metal clip. Release the clip to free the bulb.
Note: do not touch the bulb with your bare fingers when inserting the new one. Oil on the blub will greatly reduce the bulbs lifespan

Installation is a reverse of the above.

Change the headlights/reflectors while you're at it, made a hell off a difference on my old NA!

Bump for my own reference.

Seems the car I bought has a blown front H4 light plus blown rear number plate wedge bulbs, plus blown parking light!

I'll give this method a try.

Ben, don't be surprised if when you remove the headlight globes the filaments appear unbroken, but the chrome-like coating of the low beam filament appears to be peeling or flaking, while the high beam filament looks new. Replacing a headlight globe in this condition does fix a low beam problem.

Wish the park light was as easy. It may be a fuse or wrong replacement bulb.
Rear Parkers not working so I suspect possibly a fuse.

it is pretty hard if not impossible to replace bulbs with the wrong product. The base type is supposed to fool proof the lights ie single filament BA dual filament BAY- all made to a standard. By all means check fuses but bulbs fail- filaments break and products reach their end of life. Just remove the bulb inspect and replace if required. Not sure why this old post was picked up.

hey mate might be a bit of an over reaction but if you have lost all them globes at once you might want to check your charge rate of your alternator, if the regulator in your alternator is faulty it maybe causing it to overcharge and spike in voltage causing you to blow globes like fuses
