We just rebuilt a b6 ourselves and at idle it sits right where yours is.
Was worrying me slightly.
At about 4000rpm it stops climbing at about 4 on the gauge.

In my Malibu it idles at 2 and often sees 6.

This one has been idling a little lower than normal.

A few people have mentioned that the oil pressure looked low but it seems to drive fine, I have seen it go above four a few times.

Have you noticed any lack in performance compared to the Malibu?

Haven't pushed it real hard yet.
Only got 150ks on the clock.
But so far nothing out of the ordinary.

We did everything ourselves except for the machining.
I have been assuming that our clearences are a little too wide and that's lowering the pressure??
Figured we will just drive it see how it goes.
Hopefully if its wrong just a bearing will die and nothing major will be ruined.

Will be interesting to see how both our engines behave.
How many ks are on yours??

Yeah, it will definitely be interesting :)

I'm unsure of exactly how many k's the motor had but I know that it is under 100,000. It's due for a check up soon to make sure everything is running smooth, I'll let them know about the idle and oil pressure then :)

Just caught up on this. Great read and nice choice of mods!

Love that photo a few pages back with cappa, mx5 and mighty boy. 3 of my favourite cars in one shot! :lol:

Its quite low, but that could be a faulty guage, Id check it with a real guage.

My motor is 15000km old now and idles at 3 and often goes past 6, confirmed with real guage.

You could be on to something there... It did the same thing with the old motor, i'm not too bothered by it, but i will run it by the mechanic who installed it.

+1 on the gauge theory as both engines you've have had the same low oil pressure.

The factory gauge is meant to sit at 1.8 at idle when the car is properly warmed up and you should be able to peg it a 6 when you rev it out. This is what my 264,000km stock engine does. I would be interested to put another calibrated gauge on mine too though and see if there is a difference.

Car looked good last couple of times I saw it, look forward to seeing your pics, especially the extremely original ones you took at sandown =P

My old car did just what yours does ben, i just had a look at some old photo's. This car seems to idle anywhere between 1.2-1.6, it can touch 6 when it needs to.

There seems to be no lack in performance from the engine. It's an interesting issue.

I honestly have no idea, i assume everything is standard. This was a motor out of a Eunos Roadster half cut, low km's and standard internals. What could cause a faulty gauge?

Being 20 years old haha.

many are faulty. Either a slight short in the wiring, a faulty sender or faulty gauge itself.

You can easily swap the gauge and senders between 2 cars to see.

I have the gauge I got off Gareth which I am going to put in the Alfa. We could hook it up to your car and see what it says too =)

We might as well, it will be interesting to see :)

Also, Ben and i discovered a noise my car has been making...

When travelling at anywhere between 5-40 K/ph, an intermittent knocking noise comes from the rear of the car. It's not too loud and does not change the way the car feels, i can only really hear it when the roof is up... I have tried knocking it out of gear, blipping the throttle, and dabbing the brakes.
The only thing that will either silence it or make it quieter is ripping up the hand brake. This makes me think that it could possibly be the rear brakes, these have not yet been changed. It sounds like it could be a warped disc? Thats only one guess though... Other suggestions have been things such as Driveshafts, Diff (hope not and does not feel like it).

Anyone think they might know some things to look for? At a brief glance, everything looks fine.

Is it kind of a clangy noise like a big bolt rattling in a metal bucket sort of midrange pitch? Doesn't always reproduce itself but some bumps will set it off?
