Haha quite true. If you have the ability and time it could well be worth it but it is most definitely very involved. As for the trimming its not of the 'frame rails' exactly, its the curved sheet steel that joins the firewall though I'm guessing trimming this could be questionable in the eyes of the law/engineers. It was only the stock dump pipe that needs clearance from it so if you don't want air con you can get a cheapie mid mounted manifold (moves the turbo forward) or highmount and have no clearance issues. Probably best to simply look at another car if you want serious power, the mx5 never claimed to be a bit hitter just a fun and lightweight little machine.

That is true, only dríven N/A examples. I can definitely see the appeal though it would be pretty hard to get anything but a fairly stripped NA down to 900kg with the additional gear I imagine. Relating to cost an NB + turbo goodies easily puts you in a whole host of other decent handling cars with better stock engines and more practicality. Just depends what you want out of a car.

How much power is TOO much in an MX-5 - when does the power start to spoil the fun? To me it just seems to be a car that is more fun when it is underpowered, not that an additional 50-100hp over stock would be unwanted but getting much past that makes it too serious :P

What is the CHEAPEST WAY.. i can supercharge or turbo my car...
How much will it cost.
1.8L 6sp NB Series II motor is stock as a rock!

I've read about centrifugal superchargers being very cheap.. ?
turbo seems to cost alot more.
Well yeh anyway my question is as follows CHEAPEST thing i can do..
(NOT INCLUDING labour, i reckon i can do most of the work myself nothings hard with all the tutorials u see online :) probably end up paying to get my car tuned thats about it).

I wanna do it for now, just to get my little boost enjoyment going .. :)

Cheapest route...? Sell your NB, get a SE.

What? The costs is way less than anything I can think of.
Nothing compares with a 250rwhp mx5 for less than what... 100 grand?

Certaintly nothing handles like one.

Go watch patricks casper run with the Worked V8 supercar next run at wakefield when he has slicks like the V8. Its only a couple of shorts seconds a lap between them. Not to mention that worked R35 that was there last time.

And the cheapest way isnt to buy an se. Thats the EASIEST way. and your still stuck with lower performance factory parts.

I'd guess the cheapest route would be a second hand supercharger from ebay. Make some mounts for it, buy some piping, longer accessories belt, relocate throttle body... enjoy?

This is what I'll be doing, I already have the supercharger 8)

Cheapest way since he is starting with an NB8B is to scour the wrecked vehicle auctions for an SE then transplant either engine/gearbox/ecu/exhaust or just the manifolds and recoup some money by selling the rest of the car (whatever is available).

He mentions even just 5 pounds boost right?

Rotary in an NB? If you can get that past an engineer, let me know who it is, I have an LS1 V8 wanting to be engineered.
Rotary (12A and 13B) engines wouldn't pass the required emission regulations as the engines were designed before the NB Mx5. You may be able to pass a 1990 NA with a 12A, but not a 13B (let alone a turbo).

But if you're into running the gauntlet on insurance/registration with a non engineered vehicle, i guess who cares what goes in right?
Huh?

Sorry was in a hurry. Now heres my proper reply.

I absolutely would daily patricks casper. Id change to street pads and remove the half cage brace. Its a very nice extremely pleasing car to drive. It rides much nicer than a slower car on lowered springs. Clutch is nice, steering is nice seats are very comfy, everything is great, nice little turbo no lag.

Cheapest way possible, and reliable..

Megasquirt, 500.
Borrow an lc1 for tuning, 1 six pack
Rx7 550s 150 or fuel pressure reg 25
2nd hand begi mani and dump, 250 shipped
Second hand s13 t25g 200
Oil feed 100
2nd hand volvo or xr6t IC, 50 bucks.
Homemade IC piping, 100
Ducting to cool it, 20
Clutch 250
100 bucks for misc

And there is your budget reliable 200rwhp, with zero dodgy parts.

I like that style of thinking ... 200 rwhp is good.

I have to admit to being a :!: when it comes to tuning but......
+Blow off valve
+Boost guage
+Pod filter/coolbox
+Bigger radiator
+High Flow exhaust

Also will any forum members put their hand up to a dynoed 250+ rwhp daily driver. I know three 250+ rwhp mx-5 personally and no way are they street machines.

There are plenty of street dailyable cars at 230-240 but 250 is pushing it on the stock bottom end, in my above recipe, swap the t25g for an s15 ball bearing t28, add supertech pistons and m tuned rods for well under a grand, and you can have well over 300, nothing else changed.

Youve said daily, so no blow off valve, no boost guage is needed, they are for show, the radiator is completely unnecessary for a street car at 200, and id assume anyone about to undertake this already have a cat back exhaust, and a pod/intake setup.
