So, driving to work last night I noticed this pretty loud noise coming from the passenger rear side, it also felt as if I was driving the car with the handbrake partly on..

Anyway, arrived to work and had a look to see what was going on, found a significant amount of smoke pooring from under the wheel arch.

Took some pics of it this morning, looks like I'm actually missing some clips on the brake pads.

This is one of the clips I suspect to be missing in the top picture

I also suspect this clip to be missing in the photo below this one.

Would missing these clips be the cause of the problem I had last night? Also, where would I go to get these clips?

I don't think that looks right. Have a browse through this link to see any differences between what you have and what you should have. http://www.miata.net/hakuna/0003/h0011.htm

That rotor is scored badly and will need machining (assuming it's not under thickness). Check the pads while you're at it - that scoring suggests you might have metal-on-metal - except that the photo looks like there's plenty of meat on the pad still. Check your slider pin on the rear caliper too. It might be corroded and seized, preventing the pads from retracting properly.

MX5 Mania have the bits you're missing:

Rear brake pad fitting kit - $20 per side
http://www.mx5mania.com.au/product1496.htm

Front brake pad fitting kit - $40 for both sides
http://www.mx5mania.com.au/product1497.htm

BTW, next time you hear strange noises from your car, it's probably a good idea to pull over straight away!

Thanks for the help!

I managed to get a set of clips from mx5mania, everything installed perfectly fine, no problem anymore.

Just a little intrigued as to why there is only one 'M' clip? is there no need for a bottom clip?
