Theres still no point in that you linked to.

Its still sucking air from a medium pressure warm environment.

Ill say it again. Outside of the engine bay, in a high pressure area, which is either at the front of the front bar with a funnel going to it, or as close to the centre of the where the windscreen meets the window.

dann, the cowl style intake is difficult to do on an NB8B because the brake lines run along the top of the firewall from the ABS actuator.

I understand that its hard to buy a cowl intake for an nb. But having said that there is no reason the opening into the firewall cant be rectangular rather than round. And brake lines are very cheap and easy to reroute.
Also an intake can be made easily by enclosing a pod filter anywhere in the engine bay. This is easiest to do with a pod filter that comes with a full enclosure.
Then run some flex pipe to a small hole neatly cut next to the radiator opening, and seal the whole thing.

Before anyone tells me this is 'stupid advice for a streetcar, not everyone races', its the only well priced genuinely working system that gets cold air and at speed generates pressure, whats more it will not increase noise at all, just like op asks for.
For proof that this will actually pressurise the intake, Mark Helmans car (for the uninitiated, he holds the wakefield naturally aspirated record by a very large margin) has a similar intake on his car that keeps pressurising itself so much it blows the seals off and the box comes apart.

yea i know that, i just like how it's on the cold side of the bay. that with a duct down in the lower front bumper i think would be great unless no one does it because of water maybe?

i find it strange that there is no product that does this, closest is autoexe..........??

hmm well i am an IT guy, so not exactly the best at custom engine mods lol............

though any one know any thing about the below, first one has airbox with optional duct to grab cold air?

Secret Weapon has been around for a while - don't know if the intake engine cross pipe is worth it on an NB8, but given your search for an off the shelf solution, perhaps just buy the 'Ram Air Kit' which is available separately for US$35 for Mk 1 or US$47 for Mk 2:

For anybody who wants to know.

I logged air intake pressure yesterday with my hole in firewall homemade job.

Intake air temp at the manifold was only 24 degrees (it is way over 50 stock, ive seen 90).

At just 50km/h I logged 3kpa of pressure. Thats 0.44 psi of pressure.

Ie almost half a pound of boost, at just 50kph.

Ill do more logs if anyone is interested and post them.

There’s only one way to do it properly in an NB8B and that's the way Brian did it years ago.

though i cant help but wonder why he didnt do it completely on the intake side ? ease of wiring maybe.....

i don't think you get the optimum gain if it was cold side.

i know on the hot side there's a hole on the chassis which allows you to bolt the down pipe and the airbox. that hole might be missing on the cold side. it's definitely a hole you don't want to be cutting out =\

As Sliq says, think you'll find it's because of the pre-existing cut-out on passenger side.

A number of the other CAI kits require MAF wires to be extended, so shouldn't really be a consideration.

The way Bjones did it seems like a pretty generic way, box a pod filter then put an intake in the mouth?

Seems normal, like hellmans car and anyone not wanting to move aircon/brake lines in an nb.

Wiring doesn't need to be cut.
I don't see the big problem in cutting a hole in the coldside (behind the headlight) to replicate the hotside one. It's not in a place you would notice and I want to box it in if possible just in case the police wish to look in the bonnet.

If they want to be real bastards they can defect you for a pod filter. :roll:
