I bought a new spring for the drivers side door lock ages ago and never got around to fitting it, and it seems that the one thats in there has finally broken, so I can't get the door open.
Before I try to pull the trim off so I can release the lock and then change the spring, am I likely to damage anything? I've only ever pulled the trims off with the doors wide open before
Can you pull a NA doortrim off with the door closed?

You MIGHT cause a crease in it. Its possible. Take speaker trim off first, then use a bent screwdriver or similar to remove the trim. Id suggest you really try to pull at each of the clips with the screwdriver rather than just the whole door card at once.

Re: Can you pull a NA doortrim off with the door closed?
Turns out that getting the door trim off with the door closed is pretty easy. Unfortunately, its not the spring for the lock that has broken, but whetever connects to the first pivot the release/door handle activates after the rod going from the handle back towards the lock moves the pivot.
I can't see where the other bit is, and I can't find it by feeling around with a long screwdriver. I've pulled the other side off and had a look at how its meant to work but I can't get work out what to push/pull to get the door to open at least, and its not being helped by the fact that the hardtop is on and I have to lean across from kneeling on the passenger seat.
This could be a big problem

Re: Can you pull a NA doortrim off with the door closed?
Had a mate look at it today, figured he might have a better eye for it since he did aeronautical engineering but he couldn't see what was wrong with it either. I did notice that the outside handle on the drivers side doesn't return straight back to the closed position like the passenger side one does when you let it go but James said he couldn't see how that would affect it.
Turns out I was right (with my initial guess ages ago when I ordered the spring with some other parts, and my observation about the door handle not springing back to the closed position).... some googling has shown me that its not the spring that you can see easily on the back of the interior handle, but the one on the back of the exterior handle... I'd been looking down near the linkages and not up where the outside handle is, so hopefully I'll get home before the sun goes down tomorrow so I can try and replace the spring.... None too soon, my Skyline should finally be arriving this week (I bought it around a month before my mate went to Africa for seven weeks and he's been back for almost a fortnight) which necessitates getting rid of my Golf (probably to my grandparents house until I can get someone to buy the thing) and using the MX5 for any necessary trips until the Skyline gets registered.
No-one wants to buy a low km Mk3 Golf do they? I'll do a good deal on it haha
