Marto's 97 Mx5

Postby lea » Fri May 20, 2011 12:02 am

Marto’s 97 NA8

Hi all. I’m Martin, I’m new, and just thought I would start up a little build thread for my pride and joy. I want to keep a record of everything I do. =)

Some back-story: After 18 months of having a Jeep bleed my pocket dry, I decided I needed a cheaper run around car… something fun to drive, cheaper to run, easy to fix and something I can open up to the sky like my wrangler. I needed something for the daily slog to work and something I could invest my spare time into.

With all that in mind I was finally convinced to buy a MX5. I only really liked the look of the ones with, what I formerly described as having, “the pop up lights”. I searched through a few cheaper MX’s, but one after the other presented problems. I viewed several with leaky engines, smoke, bad body damage or shotty resprays. You could tell that there was little love or TLC put into those.

Image

After about 3 weeks of looking and after a large expansion of my budget, I finally found what I wanted. I took along my mechanically gifted friend (who also dwells within this forum), and after about an hour I drove away with this beauty.

Image

Some small fender damage, a spider cracked rear bumper, and slightly higher kms than I would of liked… but other than that it is a perfect specimen for me with a lot of extra’s like the wheels, the BD bar, suspension, and not to mention having the bigger brakes, dif and engine than the NA6. It has potential.

One problem I’ve found so far though is that I seem to have got “the fever”, and have been looking for the next thing to do to my new baby ever since I picked her up.

And here I thought a MX5 would be cheaper… lol

I’m not exactly the best or most experienced mechanic. I’ve only really done minor repairs on the jeep and done a bit of servicing. Having said that, I will usually give anything ago at least once and have a passion for my vehicles.

Any how… without further ado, here she is and here are my plans. Excuse the notes, they’re more for me than you. :P
Constructive criticism is welcome. I’m after more of a show car, than a performance car. Not saying that speed doesn’t matter, but I like shiny things more than blurry things.

TO DO:

INTERIOR
• Python alarm system – wanted something with a shock sensor, and I needed two remotes (as the car only came with one). I also wanted to connected up a remote boot release and needed an auxiliary function to do so. Hence the python!
• Remote boot release install.
• Fusion 8” Super Slim Ute Sub – from the reviews I read this was the best quality superslim unit. So I decided to make everything else fusion to match. Will sit behind the drivers seat.
• Fusion 6.5” 110wrms 2 way Speakers – thought I bought component speakers, but they were 2 ways… However, they’re still the best quality range that Fusion sell so I’m happy for now.
• Fusion 2 Channel amp – Will sit behind the passenger seat and run the 6.5”s.
• 7” DVD/GPS/Bluetooth 2DIN headunit.
• Aerial – Currently broken - I’m wanting to replace it with either a smaller rubber aerial, or to fix the mast to actually go up and down
• Reverse Camera
• Cup Holder – I might have a go at a custom cupholder mod of my own creation… Will let you know how it goes when I can think of something.
• Leather gearshift boot – old one is ripped.
• Shortshift kit – Unsure of at this atm.. any opinions/experience?
• Install stock footwell lighting (only have the light above rearview mirror)
• Replace drivers side Sparco seat – I have to wear a suit most days and a sports seat does not bode well for an unwrinkled suit. Furthermore, being a big guy I look like a retarded getting in and out of it… so it has to go!
• Head rest speakers – once driver seat is replaced.
• Re-lubricate power windows.

EXTERIOR

• Fix rear driver-side fender damage – it isn’t too bad, as if its just been grazed by another car or a poll, but it will need to be fixed for my own sanity. Has been covered by prev owner in touch up paint.
• Repsray/Replace rear bumper – some spider cracks need repainting. I was told by one repair place that they bumper will need to be replace?
• Professional Buff – this did wonders for the jeep before I sold it… and it really does get rid of all the swirl marks, but I need the dmg to be fixed before this. I have never been able to get such a result by myself.
• White Viper Stripes – lets just call it nostalgia.
• HID headlight kit – blue lights to go with a blue car. The Phillips bulbs that I bought just aren’t white enough, and I would prefer to go for a blue tinge.
• Front lip – I’m after the OEM front lip, I don’t like the aggressive look of the Garage vary style. But I can’t find one except through mania, and I’m also hesitant about buying something that I might break at the first speed bump. So.. I might try and make one myself first and see how that goes. A weekend project!
• Raise rear suspension – another DIY job which I need to find time to do. I currently bottom out on any pothole or speed bump. My poor bumpstops..
• Windscreen repair/replacement – There is a small thin scratch that runs in an arch from the windscreen wipers. Will probably have to replace it to fix it though..
• Softtop window replacement – The softtop itself is in fantastic condition, except for a cracked and yellowed rear window. I want to have a go at replacing it myself… can’t be too hard? Cut and paste!
• Personalized plates – I know they’re gaudy and ostentatious but… I can’t help myself and I am impulsive. I want something which I can pass off as an investment plate. I’ve been thinking of “HONKME” or “WINNIN”. Charlie Sheen eat your heart out.

ENGINE/PERFORMANCE

• Mania Cold Air Intake – currently in two minds on whether I want a turbo, or a naturally aspirated engine. I’m worried about getting it engineered for insurance. So at this stage I’m going to stick with a CAI. In any case it will be 6 months until I can legally drive with a turbo…
• Oil Change/service – Needs to be done soon ^^ Grabbed some synthetic mobil 1. An oil filter. Might attempt a fuel filter change as well. A good chance to bond with the car.
• S/S extractors
• 2.25” Custom exhaust

Congrats on your purchase Marto, and welcome to the forum. Looks like a pretty awesome little car you've got there already.
lea wrote:• Reverse Camera

Really? I wouldn't have thought rear vision would ever be a problem. :? I'm sure you've got a reason for it though.
lea wrote:• Shortshift kit – Unsure of at this atm.. any opinions/experience?

There are a few shifters that lots of people on this forum like, most popularly Voodoo and Skunk2 and a couple of others that I can't think of at the moment. A bit of a search on the forum should get you some good info - it's all a bit subjective though.

Last but not least: moar pix! :D Maybe an interior shot?

Thanks for the interest guys.

Haha spot on. I use the excuse of the extremely low sparco seat, the BD bar, the aged softtop window and my curvy drive way. They all contribute to bad visibility. The drive way is actually quite hard to reverse out of, and its right onto a blind bend.

But... the real reason is that the camera was $50 extra and its was an impulsive buy.. =)

I bought it from a guy in the middle of Sydney, but I believe he traveled up to Brisbane and brought it back.. could be?

I'll be installing all that audio on the weekend, and i'll post some pics then.

Cheers,
Marto.

Ahh, the previous owner must have picked it up from Brisbane. I just remember seeing it advertised up there.

Keep us posted :)

Martin,
Your car looks great. I recall it was only advertised in recent months, so you picked a good one.

Your car would be in great company at the Wed. night St Ives Fives carpark meet from 8.30PM at the corner of Mona Vale Rd & Standley Sts, St Ives (opposite Max Brenner chocolate bar). :)

Are you looking for a standard NA seat or something in between, like a Recaro?

Nice work - I remember this one for sale in Queensland. I think there were a few contemplating a trip north to grab it.

The road trip to bring it down from QLD recently featured on Roadster Life - have a look if you haven't seen it already http://www.roadsterlife.net/post/106687 ... w-addition

Keen to see the updates as the come.

I've seen this around. =)
NICE.

MI-474 is still available, I cant part with my plates, but if I did it would be for that or NA8CE or KCU-841 which are all still available.

Alright! So I've managed to install all the audio equipment and the new alarm over the weekend! It all works perfectly.

BEFORE:

Image

and... AFTER:

Image

I had to remove the seat to install the Amp and Sub. The speakers were the easiest part. Here's a few shots of my disassembled interior.. =)

Image

Image

Image

The head unit: Has GPS and starts up with the Mazda logo.
It, unfortunately, sticks out a little from the actual dash. Because of this i'm thinking I need the short shifter kit, just so I don't hit the screen.
It isn't that bad, and it doesn't look that odd cosmetically, but it can be a little annoying with the gear stick right there.

Image

Image

The slim line SUB - it gives me a funny feeling every time. The vibrations travel straight through the chair. I love it!

Image

Image

The amp his hidden behind the passenger seat, and runs the two speakers.

Image

All in all, the system has dramatically improved the sound quality and the range. I'm very very pleased with it! =)
The head unit is a cheapy, but I can't live without the inbuilt GPS and bluetooth.. for $360 what more can you want?

The alarm system is perfect. I re-programmed it yesterday to suit my needs, and it has enabled me to install a remote boot release solenoid. Works well.
Well here you are. I had help installing everything, since I suck with wires.. and now I can mark a few things off my list.

Quick update. Oil change done. Fully synthetic 5-30w.

Made the biggest difference! The infamous NA lifter noise has disappeared completely.

Geese its easy to neglect this thread.. But I have some time on my hands tonight.

I've first off had a little bit of bad luck with some arse (supra driver) reversing into my car, deciding it was my fault, and then egging it and running all while I was sitting at my work desk... resulting in the front bumper being scratched and deformed, and the bonnet needing a repsray from the cuts left by the egg.

Image

Image

So i've had a trip to a recommended panel beater who's quoted me $1100 to fix up and respray my front bumper, bonnet, read bumper and rear driver fender (this includes the damage that came with the car when I bought it). Although it will only cost $2500 for a full respray.. or $3500 for a change of colour. *rubs chin in a thoughtful manner*

What to do?

Regardless, this is significantly better than what I got quoted by a smash repair of $1386 for just the rear bumper and fender.

Alright now i've also made a few other changes and decisions:

1) Painted brake calipers - note sure if I chose the right colour blue... and i've only done the front two for now.

Image

Image

Image

2) The vent rings I got off 1red5 - I'm loving them - they add an extra sumthin sumthin.. =)

Image

Image

Image

3) I have a custom leather shifter boot, hand brake and arm rest cover on order now. Old boot has holes galore.

4) I have found my front and rear lip and spoiler from a supplier in the US.

5) I am soon to have the windscreen replaced to get rid of that damn wiper blade scratch!

6) I've been looking for a supplier of the smoked bumper reflectors and indicator lights. I found one but they refuse to post to Australia now..
Are there any alternatives like a tint film or perhaps a spray? Any one done this?

7) I get some dividends in August and I've promised myself to put them towards an exhaust! =)

Alright thats about it.. not much considering the time i've been away but life, the gf and my career take priority... FOR NOW! Mwahahah!

Oh and heres some pics before she was egged and butchered by a supra driving prick!

Have a good one guys!

Congrats on the car!

I remember this car being on carsales, and on the forums a couple of times. I think there's an article on roadsterlife.net about one of the owners bringing it back from QLD.

That sucks about the damage :(.

OOoh, and you were spotted near the Olypic site on the jdmst forums, w/ photo and all that the gps coordinates of the location. lol. I mentioned it though, and the guy took it down, he didn't realise. :)

Haha awesome!

Did he remove the entire post? Or just the GPS tag? I would love to see the post if you could find it. I had no luck searching the forums =(

I work at olympic park so i'm parked there every day!
