Garage Vary Front Lip - NB - does it scrape?

Postby TeQuilaChicken » Sat May 07, 2011 8:59 pm

Hi guys,

Hoping for some advice from those of you who have fitted a GV front lip to their NB. Assuming that it's not lowered, do you guys experience much hassle in terms of clearance? For example, are bumps, driveways, etc. much harder to navigate?

I'm thinking of ordering one of these from Rev9 (strong aussie dollar!), but if it makes day-to-day driving a hassle, I'd think twice.

Cheers!

many of Melb suburban streets have what are laughingly called traffic calming features- a misnomer if ever there was one. I find an MX5 of normal height a challenge especially with some driveways and a further erosion of height surely would guarantee the dreaded sound of paint being scraped. Sounds like a bad idea but some guys also lower cars so we all have a different threshold for annoyance.

Fair point - I guess a factual question would be more appropriate.

Would appreciate info on how far off the ground is the lip when installed on a non-lowered NB?

Cheers.

I haven't scraped my lip yet. Mine is a bit lowered as well.
I'll post a pic tomorrow.

Will definitely scrape on certain T-junctions and driveways if you're not careful.

Speed humps are okay as long as you do the 'zic-zac'.

Then there are ones that will scrape no matter what you do so just tread lightly.

I've put a stripe of foam at the bottom of my lip sealed with some cloth-tape. Need to reapply every 6months but it has protected it from scratches for 18 months so far.

Cheers.

An SE lip seems more 'integrated' - probably designed to work with the slightly lower suspension of the SE. I'm guessing it's a more practical choice (to the extent that body kits can be considered practical)?

How mine sits at the moment. At this height I haven't scrapped anything yet.

if u fly over speed humps anything will scrape.. lol

I live in the west side of sydney and fml everywhere is bumpy steep drive ways etc..

I use to drive a car that was 1.5inches off the ground didnt scrape it, long as u take it slow on bumps and humps or sideways on steep ass drive ways you'll be right :)

great idea- convert your car to a vehicle suffering from arthritis ie crawling over speed humps etc and sure lowering your car has no effect on the likelihood of scraping hard surfaces. I have actually seen a lowered car having to be lifted by a number of strong young men because it was hung up on a drive which had an unfortunate angle betwixt road and drive. Anyone seen the clip from Top gear of the super cars trying to get out of a public car park for that very reason - limited ground clearance? From personal experience MX5's very readily suffer on anything resembling uneven ground but them maybe I am just making that up.

Why don't they put som elittl rollers on the bottom of these lips?

Then, they would just roll across bumps instead of scraping.

The reason, Mr Morlock, as to why people lower their cars is to get them to handle better by having a lower C of G, and because they look better.
My car is about as low as you can get away with, and I love it that way.

Well I drive an NA with a GV lip on mine and I'm pretty low right now and I haven't scraped it yet. At stock height it was fine and would sit about the same on an NB.
To be honest it all comes down to the driver. If you're careless and throw your car around and try to floor if over speed humps you'll lose your front lip within the week.

I'll put it this way, I've had mine for quite some time and been on different ride heights. I've grazed the bottom of the car a few times but the front lip has never really taken a hit. You'll be fine mate, especially at stock height. Don't listen to Morlock on this one, I think he's over reacting lol

just because your front bar can get away with not being scratched, that doesn't mean the under body of your car will

if you have a garage vary lip, it would be very wise to take steep driveways at an angle. i would know. i've owned two GV lips. and have broken two gv lips. :D true story.
i can't brain today.. i have the dumb..
