Where to get good price for tyres in Melbourne?

Postby miatalim » Mon May 09, 2011 3:39 pm

I was in Malaysia for a holiday and noticed that they were selling big brand name tyres for 1/3 the price we are selling them. Models like Michelin Sport 195 15 inch were going for AUD$400 fitted and aligned and many other big brands. Our cheapest tyres seem to be from $100 each ?? And it looks like the better tyres start from $165 each ! I am sure we will be given the same arguement of tyranny of distance from other countries, relatively small population and wide geographic transportation cost. I believe the answer closer to the truth would be that we don't have a choice but to buy locally as we can't order these from Amazon nor Ebay.

Anyway, enough of my ranting and back to the question since I have received superb advice from this forum. Since its a MX5 forum where we have sports car aspirations but not willing to part with sportcar level prices for parts, does anyone know of a source of competitive pricing tyres? What do most people use for tyres on their Miatas ? Kumhos..michellins etc.

At the moment, my car came with some BobJane branded tyres. To be honest, I can't fault them as they seem to grip well in the wet and do break progressively when it losses traction. Dry traction could be better but its a case of you don't know what you are missing in my case as I only had BobJane's on my NB. Dean from Motorsport Essentials strongly recommended that I change the tyres to better ones or R spec tyres whatever that means. My car is mainly used on the weekends for hillclimb and short backroad blasts.

All opinions welcome.
