Exhaust upgrade Opinions - NB8A

Hi devski,

I just measured the muffler and it's about 16 inches long and 4 inches deep. The muffler size is important, too small and the exhaust will be too loud. Just for your info the system cost $400 with a 2 year warranty. I paid an extra $50 when it was installed for the 3 inch chrome tip and a futher $80 when i asked them to remove it, so it was an expensive mistake. Also in hind sight i actually prefer the look of the exhaust now it has a plain 2.25 inch tailpipe. In my opinion it looks purposeful and not boy racer-ish. So if i were you i would not get a tip fitted, even a smaller 2.5 inch tip might give you the dreaded "boom" noise that i had.

It sounds like you guys are getting good performance results with out extractors?

I had planned to do a full exhaust with extractors and a cold air intake but was a little worried about cost.

Basically i just want the best performance gains for as little money as possible so would be keen to hear what you guys think.

Also whats the best cold air intake to use and approximate cost?

the "experts" say that the best result is as an example the T&C cat back system ie no need to replace the system from cat forward.

To get specific, accurate advice it would help if you mentioned which MX5 you have, but generally speaking the gain is small from aftermarket headers on the MX5, & it lessens the newer your MX5 is in the NA & NB series.

However, a standard NA & NB series MX5 will benefit from an aftermarket high flow catalytic convertor & an aftermarket catalytic convertor back exhaust.

Which CAI will depend on which MX5 you have, but if you have an NA or NB8A, & are happy to drill into the cowl area below the windscreen on the passenger side, then the MX5 Mania/ Loch Stewart (MkII) CAI is very popular.

If you car is a P2 then it equates to an 8B though the VIN will only refer to P1 P2 etc. In any event the P2 works well with the T&C offering. Some say you get more for your $ with the exhaust change than the other method.

Basically OEM headers :tubular v Good; cast headers pretty useless.

Still requires a high flow cat to compliment the T&C, or which ever cat-back system you choose, for best results. As the NB8B in Australia has tubular headers as standard there's little to gain replacing them.
