Re: The carbon fibre time attack/superlap MX5 NB twins blog
I finally got some infusion resin friday arvo. I have had the boot and a hardtop in the moulds all laminated and bagged ready to go, but had no resin. F.G.I have still not come up with any help as to there last resin they sold me that shrunk so much the hardtops are bowed, and popped out of the moulds before i touched them, as well as not being strong. So i did the boot last night to check if the resin was o.k. And then i did a hardtop that was ordered this morning - now has been stripped, and the internal frame is on and they are sitting in the sun after being heated for 4 hours with the heater.

I weighed the boot, it's 1.3 kg's with the frame and it still needs trimming around the edges. It is really stiff now, can hardly twist it and it doesn't bend at all. Should weigh 1.2 kg's when it is finished.

Do you know what the weight of the original boot was? It will be interesting to know the weight saving.
This is my MX5. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My MX5, without me, is useless. Without my MX5, I am useless.

The original boot was 8.1 kg's. So a saving of 6.9 kg's. Plus if you mount it on pins you can remove all the heavy hinge and spring mechanisms, plus the catch and remote cable to the console. The saving in total would be around 13 kg's.

I see you added corecell after vacume. I always lay peel ply over patch etc to blend in and smooth off all those edges. Just keeps the finish looking good. you dont have to vacume it.

Same here.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Re: The carbon fibre time attack/superlap MX5 NB twins blog
The new design will be a replica of the mx5 coupe. For now i will be modifying a normal hardtop into a fastback, just for my car.
I have almost finished the doors, they will be ready for moulding shortly. I thought it would look neater if the door had a finish on the inside like a door trim.

Beautiful work as usual. Are they going to be using the OEM door lock and lever? Would be nice if it was designed with the OEM lever sitting flush.

Re: The carbon fibre time attack/superlap MX5 NB twins blog
Mate, that's all too heavy. On the NA doors i made the oem door handles work like normal in the normal locations. But on these doors there will only be a button style door popper on the outside, and no internal door handle.

If the button is on the outside then how do you open the door from inside the vehicle? I think I may have misread you but I'm confused
