on a serious note, I understand that cutting the springs would probably be easier, but why would you go and break a perfectly useful item if you don't need to?
especially when you can sell them!

Yeah but what we're talking about are ways of tying down or disabling the patient's arms so that one of them doesn't fly off during the operation and end up sticking out the back of the doctor's chest.

I understood that.
I'm basically saying when there's spring compressors available that don't destroy the spring why would you cut them?

Not out yet, waiting for the swelling to go down before I can operate ,waiting untill im on holidays in a weeks time.

Tein coilovers are now in, Im happy to report that no springs were cut during the operation. Followed an article on miata net excellent advice on how to get the fronts out, by follwing their procedure I was able to simply lower the A arm with a trolley jack enough to just remove the loose spring without any fuss. All in all pretty happy with how it went for a first up try, only mistake I made was not putting the front sway bar back into position before tightning every thing up so I had to undo the 2 top nuts to allow enough movement to get the sway bar into its right spot.
Next job tommorrow is to adjust the height & have some fun test driving it, at the moment its no lower than it was.
Thanks to everyone who gave me advice, to anyone thinking of having a crack at replacing your suspension give it a go its not as hard as I thought it would be.
