And so you book in to come back and get it tuned, and while you're there you wander in to the shop and start being tempted by all the goodies... now I see what they're playing at.

Pardon my ignorance but assuming that i've lost quite a few Kw since new, can they be simply recovered through a tune??... how does that work? (and how $$$...)

The days have long gone where you could stick the car on the dyno, give it a run, adjust the distributer timing curve and throw a different set of SU carbie needles in to adjust the mixture and then head off home with your car (hopefully) running better.

Now with a computer controlling just about every function in the MX-5 there is little you can do to improve the performance of your stock/modified motor without adding a piggy back ECU.
The NA’s can advance their timing to give better acceleration down low at the cost of top end performance.
The Aussie NC’s are not able to get a reliable ECU upgrade. A US company (DP Tune) has managed an upgraded that gained a few kW to their NCs but when tried on the Aussie NC the ECU failed.

So to answer your question, no, "lost" kW's aren't easily recovered.

From what I have been told, you want to avoid a dyno tune to "recover lost power" as a proper dyno tunes are quite expensive (mate of mine recently paid $750 for his tune). Dyno tunes are really only required when the standard ECU can't do what is wanted/required of it (ie, running the car after a turbo conversion)

You would be better off finding what is sapping your car of power first before paying big dollars on fixwhat essentially is a band-aid solution :)

Air filter clean and getting a good flow of cold(ish) air?
Any dents/restrictions in the exhaust?
Old and streched timing belt retarding the timing?
Spark plugs set too narrow (poor ignition propagation causing the car to run too rich... I guess lol)

This is turning out to be quite a party. I'm off to wakie so no dyno party for me.

The idea of a tune sounds interesting though

Hi guys, I'd like to thank the organisers and everyone who helped and participated today at MX5 Mania.

Thanks for listening to my questions, if I harrassed you about any aspect of your current or past NA or NB. ;)

If anyone's around and has the time, I'm hoping to be up at Pie In The Sky for a drive tomorrow morning on OPH near Brooklyn, with Jeff and his shiny NB Classic.

I did PM Edmund about his white NB but I'd need to sell my VW first...

The variety of tuning and cars and the friendly folks and good atmosphere was a great introduction to the modding side of MX5 drivers.

Thanks!
Ben

PS. Those heady 200+ kW results were impressive, but for me it was the variety of approaches that was most impressive. No follow-the-sheep, one size fits all approach, which is refreshing!

I still want my first run printout David
Thanks to all, I wish I'd had more time to talk to the other owners there today. I now know how Mainia's Dyno works, thanks David, it's a very robust unit. :NB8A:
