spigot/pilot bearing question, alloy fidanza flywheel

Postby Dorimx5 » Sun Apr 03, 2011 6:59 pm

hey there i recently purchased a CI HD organic clutch and fidanza alloy flywheel from motorsport essetials in mulgrave ( great to deal with by the way) anyway kit includes everything except spigot/pilot bearing but i asked about it and apprently it dosnt run one? which has me confused cause ive looked up the clutch replacement and the oem flywheel seems to have the pilot bearing in the flywheel which my new fidanza one dosnt? anyway if anyone can tell me if i actually do or dont need it would be great also if so if they know the bearing part# as i will more than likely be able to get one through work, thanks!

Hmm...

Flywheels need bearings. My guess is that yours will either run a standard 6202 or a snap ring 6202.

Pics of the flywheel?

its a fidanza alloy one 3.63 kg or something i got it from http://www.motorsportessentials.com.au
i got a 6002 bearing from work which roughly measures up but im not sure untill i pull my old fly wheel out but the 6202 is to small for the current hole in the centre of the flywheel the holes about 35mm im pretty sure

Nope - the 6202 has an OD of 35mm and an ID of 15mm:

Check your flywheel carefully as you may well need a snap ring version of the bearing for this application. My RB flywheel is very similar to the Fidanza and it uses a snap ring to prevent the bearing from pulling through the flywheel. It should be clear from the thickness of the flywheel at the bearing mounting point, and the presence (or lack thereof) of a recessed area around the mounting hole.

there is 2 differnt 6202's im an auto electrician and we have 6202's in 2 different sizes for alternators when i first encounted this it had me puzzled but the 6002 was identical to the 6202 labbeled on the old bearing i think ones a 6202RS and 6202 im not exactly sure but the 6002 measures up 35mm external diametre and 15mm id, the snap rings ones are the ones wiht the metal casing correct?

Here is the snap ring:

They are hard to find sometimes.

Whatever bearing you use should have a metal-sealed race cover as pictured.

I don't get it- if you bought the product from a local source to suit your vehicle surely they provide a complete unit ie including the correct spigot bearing- I take it that is what clubman7 is saying - my suggestion is go back to the flywheel supplier and request they source/ supply the right bearing.

Every MX5 flywheel I have seen uses a 6202 or some derivation thereof. This should not be hard. If the flywheel is the same thickness as a 6202, then use a metal sealed 6202. If it is thinner, you will probably need a metal sealed snap ring 6202.
