Why did Mazda change to multilink rear suspension.
Is the new setup any better.

I believe the reason for the change was the RX-8. Aren't the rear suspensions at least somewhat interchangeable? It's cheaper than making a unique suspension for the MX-5.

Just looking at multi-link you can see that having the 3-5 points of articulation gives you much more control to create difference wheel angles based on suspension compression. Having raced behind a few NC's now I've gotten the impression they're actually better at putting their power down out of corners than an NB on the same tyres. If you have a look at prestige manufacturers like Ferrari they also run a multi-link setup on rears.

don't think its any better. quite a few of the most exotic cars in the world use double wishbone but some use multilink too.
