monster throttle body

NB SERIES II - 2001 - 6 SPEED - N/A 108L
Stock as a rock with K&N INTAKE

I can get my hands on a monster Throttle body. for $50 brand new, worth it or not?
They are $180 rrp.

What does a throttle body even do (in practical straight forward terms)?

What will it do if i put it on there??
Better Sound?
More performance?

Straight on comes with adapters etc. would it atleast sound better or anythin?

Wont sound any different to now.
Wont make any performance difference to a stock car with a K&N.

Waste of $50 unless you are thinking of doing considerable head and exhaust work to improve the flow of everything else enough to exceed the limit of the std throttle body..

If more air is coming in than the system expects (maxing out the Air flow meter) and when the ECU runs a map at Wide Open Throttle, than your car will run leaner and could cause damage, not sure if it would cause more knock and retard the timing or the O2 sensor would notice the difference and tell the ECU to dump fuel in both of which could make less power.

Are there any dyno graph tests with the product showing both the power increase and wide band sensor readings?
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

No gain, may be some pain.

Unless the TB is 'throttling' (ie restricting) the airflow into your engine, you will gain nothing. There would be lots of other thing to do before I replaced the TB on a stock car.

Replacing the TB is a bit more than undoing/replacing four bolts. Have a look at yours, and make sure that all the replacement parts match up to the stock setup. Then make sure that there are no airleaks, and the idle air control (IAC) is properly adjusted, or driveability/idling will suffer. I don't think that the bigger bore will adversly affect anything IF it is properly set up, but you should search on the big board (Miatanet.com) as I know this has been discussed many times by the yanks, mostly in relation to forced induction (where it does make a difference at very high power outputs)... you could try searching here too, but I can't remember much on this subject.

I don't think there is a problem with maxing the air flow meter, as a stock engine will not flow that much air. If it tried to, the that would become the restiction.

When you have boosted the engine, or done VERY agressive head/cams/intake/exhaust/ECU, and have 150+RWKWs, and nothing else left stock, then I might think about it. FWIW, my race engine is doing 120+RWKWs on a stock TB.

yeh throttle bodies seem to be much more aimed at f/i i was just curious if it would make any difference

It would likely slow the incoming air velocity at lower RPM reducing power. Very little in motors is a net positive, your always compromising somewhere. I know it's cheap but it's still probably going to be more trouble than it's worth.
