According to Haynes & Rod's Manual, clutch switch position tells ECU if clutch pedal is depressed or not, which apparently on some MX5s/Miatas/Eunos Roadsters will not allow the car to be started unless pedal is depressed.
A recent post quoting Miata.net suggested it might also be used for factory fitted cruise control: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=46358
