what sort of muffler for 1.6 turbo

Postby spaztikcamel » Tue Mar 29, 2011 10:15 pm

hey guys

soon i will be turboing my 1.6 and decided i will get a 2.5" exhaust done at the same time.

was wondering what sort of mufflers are good for getting the sound level legal (or at least close)

im hoping a strait through type will do but if so how long will it have to be?

worth running a resonator as well?

cheers for your time.

Please don't buy those cheap "cannon" -style mufflers, I haven't heard a single one that sounds good.
I bought this for another turbo car I have, but haven't fitted it yet. Has good review regarding sound over 'state-side: Hooker Aero Chamber

Pretty cheap for a brand-name muffler.

Resonators are virtually mandatory whenever you want to scrub off dB.

Don't forget, metallurgy also plays a part in sound/noise. Stainless steel generally tend to make a raspy, higher-pitched sound; mild steel lower note, more of a drone

There are a lot of 2.25" stainless units out there. However, 2.5" not so much.

I have a 2.5" Enthusa bolt-in system which is a thing of beauty. It has a resonated midpipe.

If you are having the system made, I would suggest looking at a magnaflow resonator for the rear section.

If you don't resonate the midpipe, it will be quite loud. However, the turbo provides decent muffling itself so it won't be too bad except under WOT. Just don't go doing burnouts in front of the boys in blue.

haha i hate these and wont consider one.

i guess ill go with a resonator then

was just hopeing the turbo would muffle it enough to mean i didnt have to run much afterward.

the last thing the world needs is another overly loud 4cyl

Johnd on this forum runs a BBR Turbo 1.6 and I think has two reasonators about 15 inches long, one in the midpipe and the other across the back.

It is certainly not loud and on spirited runs we hate following him as you never hear if he is on the loud pedal or not.

You will not need to spend heaps and I think your original summation was correct. Maybe John will see this post and respond.

Peter

Ps Not sure what the diameter is but it doesn't look that big;works though 130KW on Dyno Dynamics!!

Yes, Pete's right......I have 2 1/4 inch pipe with a hi-flow steel cat, a 10in resonator mid-pipe, and a 15in resonator across where the original muffler used to go.
Not an expensive system at all, and seems to be fairly efficient according to the dyno.
It's not whisper quiet (!), but quite good on cruise, and not likely to attract Mr Plod!
And yes, turbos definitely quieten the exhaust down.......the impellor knocks the stuffing out of the exhaust gases before they hit the ex. pipe!

I have a SE 'mazdaspeed' exhaust on my NA6. It's not turbo and runs pretty quiet which is what I was looking for. I'm not sure how it would affect the performance of your car but it was designed for a turbo car by Mazda.

I have a question still on the topic at hand

Is it possible to use a resonator as a muffler? I have purchased 90% of my turbo exhaust (multiple resonators and a hiflow cat) but am unable to find a muffler that i like,
i have found a resonator 14"(pollished) that fits the bill just unsure if it will work as a muffler.

This may also be an option for spaztikcamel?
I dont care that my laces aren't fat or that I'm not even close to flush and I certainly don't want to be the illest!

Johnd's experience clearly indicates you don't need much on a turbo, in his case about 25ins total, so the answer is yes, yes
