For a small amount (ie top up) I wouldn't be too concerned about what kind as long it is close in terms of general specifications. You would do 10x more damage by running with low oil, than using the wrong type.

So to answer your question - yes, for top up, that is fine.

If you intend on replacing the oil completely (with an oil filter) yourself, then yes, you might wish to consider the brand/type and specification of oil, but again, the general rule would be to just replace the oil frequently, rather than get hung up on the brand/type and specification of oil.

Even how you drive (hard or gentle) plus the length of time you do this will (and should) impact the brand/type and specification of oil you should use.

You will no doubt get many of opinions regarding which is best/right etc... but I think everyone would agree that regular replacement trumps all else.

SG, SH are not made anymore.

SJ = 2001 or older car

SL = 2004 or older car

SM = introduced in 2005 - are designed to provide improved oxidation resistence, improved deposit protection, better wear protection, and better low-temperature performance over the life of the oil.

CF = introduced in 1994 - for off-road, indirect injected and other diesel engines including those using fuel with over 0.5% weight sulfur.
