Diff question

Postby bear2230 » Wed Jan 05, 2011 6:22 pm

Hi All,
I bought this diff from E-bay from a guy that sounded very genuine.
Anyone have any idea what type of diff it actually is?
It was a bit of a spur of the moment thing. I hoping it will be OK
mania will be installing end of the month.

Selling my MX5 NB 1.5 way Diff LSD fits from 98 to 05 from a Mx5 SE turbo
This is the best upgrade I have ever done for my car, LSD come with case so its so easy to fit!!!
The reason for selling is I have sold the car

Theres no easy way to tell without disassembling the diff and looking for any writing or numbers on the centre.

Most likely it will be a Cusco or Kaaz or other known Japanese brand

I remember seeing this one.

Yep, probably some kind of JDM aftermarket piece. Pics might help as has been suggested.

$3800? Wow it should be gold plated.

Winning bid price probably isn't too far off what they are new to be honest.

I actually don't think it is a bad price for a complete bolt in diff. If it is a jdm SE then I would suspect a 3.9FR with a torsen lsd.
Would be very nice in an SP.

The Jap. Roadster Turbo their version of the SE came with a 4.1 Bosch Torsen, you can't call a Torsen a 1.5 way...there were 3 versions of the Torsen, Type 1, Type 2, and the Bosch...the Bosch Torsen had heavy duty axles which are different to the stock 1.8 axles.

If this is a diff out of a normal Roadster from Japan it will be a 3.9 Torsen, and the type will depend on which year the car was...if it's out of an auto it will be a 4,3 Torsen

It is also possible that they had fitted a clutch type LSD in Japan.

Will be interesting to see what Mania find when you go to fit it.
NC Roadie, NC Racey, ND Racey….and a 30AE

Plus several others in the bone yard...

Smooth and drives like factory.... no noise drives like stock.

This leads me to suspect that it is a torsen rather than a clutch type.

Still a great price if in good condition. How much is mania charging? Mine was $290 to bolt in.

I am surprised the JDM turbo came with 4.1FR, this would be a horrible combination. :o

However if it really is 1.5 way, maybe you have an OS Giken inside. In that case you have $2000 worth of lsd.

OK so the diff is in, installed by Diff Technics at the bottom of my street at work. They charged $300.00 including oil and assured me that was a good price as it took them 3.5 hours?????.
Dave at Mania couldn’t tell what is was from the casing but he suspects it’s a Torson as it doesn’t have the bigger axles from an SE but doesn’t really know what it is without pulling apart. Maybe a special order of some kind. We will probably never know, seller in not contactable so far. I don’t know the difference between a Torsen a 1.5 way?
It does have I’m pretty sure a 4:1 ratio judging by the 410000xxxxxxx stamped on the exposed gear and the fact the Speedo reads 115 when doing 100. This is a little annoying but the thing accelerates like a son of a bitch now and is loads of fun out of corners. A little scary sometimes in the wet though.

Thank you to everyone in the attempts to identify this thing. I my mind I think it was a good buy but time will tell.
I would love someone who knows heaps about these things to have a look one day.

Glad to see it is installed.

It looks like you have the same diff combo as me!!! 8)

I love it but then I am not turbo. I suspect for a turbo (esp SP) this would not be the right ratio, but only you could tell whether it suits your driving habits.

At the worst you could play around with spinning your wheels for a while and then take the lsd and put it into your stock 3.6 diff. Then sell off the 4.1 to a normally aspirated NB8B.

The advantage of this is you would have a great ratio for your car and an lsd. Also if you post pics of the lsd it can be identified. Heres hoping its a $2000 Cusco or OS Gilken.

The speedo can be easily fixed with the correct speedo sender.
MX5 Plus advertise them HERE, possibly MX5 Mania has them as well.

Mystery solved thanks to Dave @ Mania

Torson 1.

A little disappointing but at least I know what I bought.
On a brighter note he installed a new Exedy sports clutch which is fantastic. No shuddand at all and bites like kick in the back.
Great work Mania.
I had to change ratio back to 3.6 from 4.1. It's now noticeably slower  but much nicer to drive. Need another 20kw now.

Ah well, just as I suspected, 4.1/torsen, same as mine. Don't be too disappointed with your torsen. 8)

You need another 20kw   I need a SP!!
