Why tyres cope better with g loading in braking than accel

Postby snshami » Mon Feb 28, 2011 11:35 pm

Why does it seem that an MX-5s rear tyre is more willing to break away while accelerating than when braking. Is this not counterintuitive. Shouldn't weight transfer be helping in better traction while taking off and hindering while braking?

Braking uses all 4 wheels, also with an open diff once one wheel spins the other will get less force applied while in braking the force will still be close to evenly distributed even if one does lock up.

Very little brake bias to the rears too. It's nearly always the fronts that lock first.

This had to be a trick question right? Knowing that MX5s are RWD right...

increase in weight on a tyre is not directly proportional to the increase in coefficient of friction.

it's basic physics.
