MX5 BreakFast Club– MX2500 – 28 April to 1 May 2011

MEET: Service Centre Hume Highway South, Pheasants Nest
TIME: Thursday 28 April 2011 at 7.00am for a 7.30am departure
DETAILS: Last year a group of MX-5 Club NSW members did a run over three (3) days to the Mid North Coast and New England that was very successful and enjoyed by all who came along. On the last day it was decided to do a long run again this year and with the help of BreakFast Club regulars a four (4) day run around some of the best MX-5 roads in Australia is taking place this autumn from Thursday 28 April to Sunday 1 May 2011.
This is not a relaxed tour of the region with long lunches and coffee breaks in your MX-5. The MX2500 is about the drive and the roads. Though the scenery is stunning at times, for safety reasons a driver’s vision should be limited to road ahead. The intention is to maintain a pace at or near to the speed limit as the conditions allow with no sweeper if you fall off the back. The run is not a race as nobody wants to jeopardise their licences remembering that in Victoria the speed allowance over the speed limit is slim and the Vics have more sheriffs and bounty hunters than the old Wild West.
Last October no problems were experienced with the 10 cars on the MX1500 with all cars keeping their 3 to 5 second gap and nobody got lost. If you are confident that your car is mechanically sound, that you can maintain the gap and handle 500-750km a day of spirited driving at a constant pace then consider applying for a place on the MX2500 and enjoy a great drive over fantastic long and winding roads with likeminded members.
SYNOPSIS OF THE ROUTE:-
Day 1 an early start from Pheasants Nest Service Centre heading for the Do Duck Cafe at Gunning for brunch. The linked Google Map will not display the route over the Old Hume Highway to Gunning through Breadalbane and Culeen but rest assured this amazing section of abandoned Highway 31 is the lead in to Gunning. After bunch our next stop is the Shell Service Station at Gundagai to refuel then south to Wondalga and a super special section off the highway on “B" roads starting from Wondaga through scattered farmland and pine plantations to Tumbarumba. From Tumbarumba we remain off the main roads across to Jingellic on the Murray River then along the south side of the Victorian border on the quiet Murray Valley Highway to spend the night in historic Beechworth.
Day 2 is a second big day on the road hugging the south bank of the Murray River on the Murray Valley Highway to start a loop of the Alps with a stop at Jindabyne for light refreshments. From Jindabyne we stay off the highways going through Rocky Plains to Adaminaby for fuel. From Adaminaby we climb to Cabramurra via Kiandra followed by another super special section with a descent along sealed dam service roads, now called the Elliott Way, to the border and Corryong. From Corryong we head for Bright via the Kiewa Valley over the Tawonga Gap to end the day.
Day 3 the run winds its way down the fantastic Great Alpine Road via Mt Hotham & Omeo to the coast at Lakes Entrance for a fresh seafood lunch. After lunch the route goes across the Gippsland Coast to Cann Valley then up the Cann Valley/Monaro Highway on a long climb to the border and Bombala. From Bombala we take another special section with a descent into the beautiful Pambula Valley and the small village of Wyndham for refreshments at the General Store. We then head off to the coastal town of Pambula followed by a short run to Merimbula for the night.
Day 4 is the run home that starts off on the coast road, skirting Highway 1 and Bega, passing through Tathra to Bermagui then on to the national heritage township of Central Tilba for brunch. From picturesque Central Tilba we head home mostly on the Princes Highway through Narooma with a loop along the coast road between Moruya and Batemans Bay. On crossing the Shoalhaven River at Nowra we will again leave the highway and head for Gerringong for one last refreshment stop before we head for home. We have no special sections on the run up to Sydney unless someone knows an interesting quiet road away from the highway.
ACCOMMODATION: There are accommodation problems in Beechworth and Bright at the height of the Victorian High Country Autumn Festivals as these towns are the pick of the overnight stays this time of year. For this reason you need to apply to join the MX2500 and members will be allocated a place in the order in which their applications are processed. Final numbers will be dependent on accommodation availability and probably capped at 15 MX-5s.
Rooms have been reserved in Beechworth at the Carriage Motor Inn as a group booking cost of $95.00 per person shared or $145.00 single which includes bed, cooked breakfast and dinner. In Bright we are staying in the Best Western as a group booking at a cost of $94.00 per person in shared accommodation or $134.00 a single for bed, breakfast and dinner. Merimbula will be booked once registration is closed and we know the accommodation requirements for everyone.
SUNDRY COSTS& OBLIGATIONS: There is no registration fees other than an expectation that you will make a donation to the Club’s charities in appreciation of what other members have organised for your participation. You will pay for your own accommodation (including deposits as required), food and fuel individually. Everyone may be allocated an administrative job or asked to lead the run from time to time.
APPLICATION: If you are a member of the MX-5 Club NSW and you are up for the MX2500 then email your request to be included to michael@spankosoulos.com. State your name, membership number, MX-5 model, how many people riding in your car and whether you require a single, twin share or double room in your email. It is recommended that each car have two drivers to share the wheel and NRMA or equivalent membership.
UPDATES: The run will be managed on this Forum Events thread with further particulars and updates leading up to the event.

I did a fair chunk of this trip last week. Anyone who's contemplating going along should most definitely do it. You'll have a blast.
Unfortunately I have to work so wont be able to join you.

Yep, I agree with Garry. I also drove many of these roads in early January this year and was hugely impressed. The country side around Bright should look magnificent in May.
I'm a tentative yes at this stage, pending spousal approval.

Hi Mark,
If you wish to join the run then you must follow the procedure we have adopted for the MX2500. We do not have any formal registration forms nor are we collecting any funds for accommodation. What is needed is in the initial post being “State your name, membership number, MX-5 model, how many people riding in your car and whether you require a single, twin share or double room in your email.”
Send me an email, not a personal message through the Forum, to michael@spanmkosoulos.com with the requested information should you wish to apply to join the MX2500. Your application will be recorded when received and you will then get regular emails about the run and paying deposits for your accommodation etc.,
A post on the Forum will not do it.

To join the MX2500 you must be a member of the MX-5 Club NSW as members and the organisers have the benefit of the CAMS Insurance cover on Club events. As far as I can tell by reading the Constitution on the Club’s webpage there is an associate membership that does not require you to own a MX-5. If you have a query about memebership then you should contact Stephen Carter via the membership page on the Club's webpage.
I reproduce Article 5.2 of the Constitution for your perusal:
5.2 The membership of the Association shall be divided into the following classes:
(a) Full Membership - available to any natural person of at least driver licence holding age who is the driver and/or co-driver of at least 1 MX-5 motor vehicle;
(b) Associate Membership - available to any natural person of at least driver licence holding age who has an interest in the Mazda MX-5 motor vehicle;....
You spend time on MX5CarTalk and going on MX-5 runs. If you wish to become an Associate Member then you can register online at
http://www.mx5.com.au/nsw/membership.htm
If you motorise your MX-5 carbon bonnet then you could apply for full membership as the owner of a super light weight custom built MX-5.
If you advise me that you have lodged your membership then I will accept your application.

Re: MX5 BREAKFAST CLUB - MX2500 - 28 APRIL - 1 MAY 2011
How about I 100 mile an hour tape it to the front of my car then it would still be a highly modified mx5? We wont be going faster than 100 MPH on that run will we????
If you invite the mr2 club on this run I would be covered under CAMS.
