Huh!? I must be missing something. Do you mean producing an iPhone/iPad app version of Club Torque? I don't think that'll happen for some time (if ever) :lol: . In any case, once the PDF version is available via the club website, it's easy enough to view it that way 8) . I do that with heaps of PDF and XLS docs on my iPhone, via a free app called "USB Disk".

Woo-hoo! I've got my entry in for the driver training day at Marulan next month with the MX-5 Club. It's been two years since my last go on that track and I'm really keen to try it again. No lap timing of course (official timing is not permitted at MDTC), but I'll have my PBox going. A bit of one-on-one training from the trainers will be handy too. Best bit? Cost is a paltry $80 for club members! Bargain. :mrgreen: Space is limited to 40 so get in quick if you're keen. Non-members are very welcome but will pay a bit more ($95).

I just had a new set of four RE001 Adrenalins fitted in 185/60R14 so I could get through rego (the outer shoulders were slightly chipped after a full season of track days - but as bad as the last set). The store had eight tyres in stock, four were old stock made in Australia, and four were new stock made in Taiwan. Much of a muchness and same price, so I went with the Aussie ones. Bridgestone also have a deal on at the moment where you get a $50 Caltex fuel card with every purchase of four tyres. So I'm now waiting for my fuel card to arrive in the mail.

I've also been told that some 185/60R14s are made in Thailand, while other sizes are still coming from Japan. All are said to be manufactured using the same processes and materials, and comply with Bridgestone's quality standards. Time will tell if that's the case.

And with that in mind, I'm now wishing I had gone with the Taiwanese tyres ... in the interests of science! :lol:

Hi Bryan,

What did you pay per tyre? And was that with the $5 discount?

Cheers,
Alan

What $5 discount? I paid $119 per tyre at a Bridgestone Select shop. I'm told they can be bought a little cheaper from Kmart (down to $110), but the $50 fuel voucher more than made up the difference.

If you flashed your NRMA membership card (if applicable) you would have gotten a further $5 off per tyre from Bridgestone, plus your $50 fuel voucher :D

Ditto. I get $5 off per tyre @ the Bridgestone Tyre Centre @ Artarmon.

Last time I bought my (Aussie made) Adrenalin Potenza RE001, they cost me $108ea fitted.

I ditched my NRMA membership a year ago. So no $5 discount for me this time. I was a member for NRMA for about 20 years, but wasn't getting anything out of it and was sick of seeing that god-aweful Open Road magazine!

I'll post a more detailed report on yesterday's club trackday at Wakefield Park once the official results are available (I forgot to take photos of the screens this time :oops: ). But for now I wanted to unload.

I was really disappointed with my times yesterday. Yes, I had heaps of fun sliding around all over the place, but a best lap of 1:18.9ish doesn't cut it against my street tyre PB of 1:17.00. At the time, I was inclined to lay blame on 1) the brand new Adrenalins, and 2) the strong westerly winds (steady 40km/hr, with 50-60km/hr gusts) and warm humid weather (25C and 50-60%RH). But I have to admit that I was worried that my car might have also been down on power. I had to put my mind at rest, so I compared my PBox data against previous runs:

Image
WP110220v101205v091206 by Guran5, on Flickr

red = 20 Feb 2011 new tyres - set 3 (1:18.9)
blue = 5 Dec 2010 worn tyres - set 2 (1:18.28)
green = 6 Dec 2009 worn tyres - set 1 (1:18.11)

This shows that I was actually a fair bit quicker down the main straight yesterday than on those two previous days; same with the run up the hill to turn 3. However, the run down the hill towards the fishhook and on the back straight, were much slower. This suggests that the main problem yesterday was that strong westerly wind. I haven't done much analysis of the corner speeds, but there doesn't seem to be a dramatic difference from the new tyres.

So that's a relief - my car doesn't seem to be down on power afterall.

My shorthand for Performance Box. It's a cool toy that I've been playing with for the last few years. You can do the same sort of thing much cheaper with a smartphone, GPS receiver and Racechrono. Or you can go one better and buy this.
