Hello anyone who can help.
I have been having an ongoing problem with my NB, it has not been sparking the 1st cylinder, i have gone through and replaced the plugs and leads. and i thought i had solved it, but ofcourse the same problem returned. i now think it might be the coil pack is there any way of checking ? as it is rather pricey to get a new one. I should mention the problem does not occur everytime. just sometimes it decides it does not like all its cylinders.

I have been having trouble with my MX. I raised the subject of coil paks with the service guys and they informed me it was a difficult thing to diagnose. They break down when HOT and they can only check them when they are breaking down. To replace the packs is not cheap. It sounds like one of your packs is breaking down. It appears it is a gamble you may have to take. There are 2 coil packs and each one runs 2 cylinders.

2 on the NB8B+, 1 on the NB8A
They're different types (coil on plug for NB8B and later) so make sure you get the right one
Supreme Blue NB8B, 1:16.98 at Wakefield when stock, but it's not stock any more...

NB8A has one coilpack unit which contains 2 coilpacks. The right side coilpack normally fires 1 and 4 while the left fires 2 and 3 (though the wiring can sometimes be hooked up wrong and it's the reverse). If one coilpack fails then 2 cylinders will be missing. So if yours is an NB8A and the right coilpack is knackered then both 1 and 4 will be dodgy. Individual coilpacks can be replaced within the whole unit.
Coilpacks start to go bad first when they're hot. So 1 or 2 cylinders missing at the top of a long steep climb is a really solid pointer.
If only one cylinder ismissing then think about sparkplug, lead, bad lead connection, corroded HT terminal on a coilpack, faulty injector, stuck valve, missing camshaft lobes, holed piston, etc, etc.

check your crank angle sensor is intact... wires can be torn from rubbing on belts or the bolt on the sensor head can work loose.. the head needs to be 1 - 2 mm from the 4 raised tabs on the crank angle plate (behind the fan belt pulley, sensor is on passenger side)
i had some major issues with the plug on the cam angle sensor working loose when hot too so cable tie that and the crank sensor plug in tightly... is a good quick check/fix cheap and worth checking.
other wise if your willing to drive to albion park (south of wollongong) i can fit in a spare coil pack, cam sensor, and crank sensor long as your in an NB8A

Your mechanic is not very good, take it to a real one. To test this all you do is heat it with a heat gun....
