Yes, I did debate whether to get one or not. I found a new one for sale here in oz, so it work out cheaper and this swayed the decision.

I figure that I am going to end up spending a few thousand dollars on this engine, so I see it as a bit of an insurance policy and it can't hurt to have one.

On top of that you should see the state of the key on the engine I have just taken apart, it is very worn. The wear is from the individual components moving on the end of the crank, so having a one piece item is really going to help stop the fatigue on the key. Also, I want to rev this engine to at least 8.5k rpm, the type of events I do, the driving I do and my end game being stage rally (if I get there) - the engine spends a fair bit of time on or close to the limiter, so I am hoping this will help keep the engine in one piece. time will tell!!

Did some more work on my under tray today. Pic does not show it but I have my splitter board attached ready to shape.

Finally put a bottom on my radiator ducting while I was at it.

good question - thought about it long and hard, but I thought I would start with just ply board - strong and relatively cheap. Will probably look to get something more exotic later, plus I can use my ply board as a templete so mistakes will be less likely and costly.

I have gone for the bosozoku style, I saw the car below and had to have one :D

Another question might be --- Ply board is quite heavy?

took some of the weight out where it does not need to be strong, I will probably make a thinner lighter one for work on slower stuff where it probably will not really work anyway. Also, ply board seems to be the material of choice for a lot of people, if you read the forums.

Finally, the test any splitter has to pass.

If you cannot stand on it, how is it going to transmit any down force to the car?

I need to think about a material to use to fill the gap between the splitter and the bumper. Not sure what to use yet. Once I have the gap filled an shaped, I will be able to cut the board to shape.

You wont need anything more than wood, even at the top levels of motorsport you will find wood splitters. Its cheaper and quicker than tooling up for a CF one or employing someone that can form something from a sheet of ally. If the wood is thin enough you will find that it is also likely to be lighter than ally to!

Absolutely right - I have read loads of forums with people from all areas of motorsport saying things like - 'a splitter is a disposable item and they to be strong and cheap to make' , 'if you splitter lasts more than two races, then you are not trying hard enough'......

I will weigh it once I have cut it to shape.

Yep it will only take a trip across that rumble strip by the pit entry at Barbagallo or a big spin in to the sand to knock it off....Look at lots of options for fitting it while you are at it. To strong and you will damage where it mounts when the inevitable happens but to weak and it will break or flap around at speed.

Oh and make sure you keep a template for it!!

Have you had any thoughts for the rear end? I wonder if you could make a venturi under the rear end?

I already have a second piece of board ready to make a template - not sure about the rear, if I cannot get a good flat surface under the car, it probably will not be that affective.

It looks like a GV lip might span that distance well. It then has the added benefit of having brake ducts as well

It needs to at a right angle to the splitter to be most effective (so I have read). The air hitting it stops and emits pressure in all directions, including on to the splitter board - in theory and equals down force.


A gv lip would look cooler though

Did some more work on the splitter today, it is pretty much done. It would seem that my bumper sits slight higher on one side, might have been from the bump I had on that side. Any how here it is.

On another note, my engine has finally gone to the machine shop. Having the crank knife edge and a re-grind, one of the big ends was a little under tolerence, so better to be safe than sorry give the money this motor is costing. Then it is having a full dynamic balance - including flywheel, clutch cover and pullies. Block is getting decked, bored and honed. I need to wait for my pistons and rods to arrive so the block can be finished.
