Audio Advice

Postby gluc » Tue Feb 01, 2011 10:58 pm

Hi all,

Ive only recently joined as i picked up my mx5 last Saturday arvo. I bought a 99 10th anniversary model. Im bit of a sound junkie in that i love crystal clear sounding music. In my previous car (96 323 BA Astina) which i still have i installed pioneer TS-D splits in the front which are a truly awesome speaker. They dont pump which means no vibrations and they deliver premium mid range and treble. I had to do a fair bit of custom work with the install as the speaker holes in the front were 5x7". The pioneer TS-Ds are 6.5" speakers and from what ive read on here the consensus is that there are 6.5" holes.

I was mainly wondering if it is possible to install these speakers without too much hastle and if im able to keep these speakers behind the door trims as i love these speakers so much. Also once i install the new head unit what have you guys found with the increased quality of the stock speakers. Are they any good cause they seem alright (well nothing compared to the TS-Ds for obvious reasons) with the stock headunit. What have you guys found with installing splits in these model 5s ? Are the tweeter holes easy to work with?

Cheers Gianni

nope, on the 99 they are an overall 8" hole, with a mounting bracket, most likely will require a spacer for the basket and magnet to clear window architecture if you use an 8".
Umm, wrt the tweeters, it's been a while, but I think from memory that they mount to the door card, and easy to fit replacements

hope this helps

Cheers for that. I just wanted to have something that i can have hidden behind the door trim as i dont want to be tampering with the trims too much as its a limited edition one and i feel bad if i did haha

For those who have installed splits in the stock holes, have you found any tricks to look out for ?
