NA brakes screaming in reverse!!!

I think I've put this up before but now I have a more informed perspective of what's going on. By that I mean I have no idea but I've narrowed it down to where and when.

I noticed this only happens in cold weather when in reverse. Everything is fine in normal conditions or when driving forward. But in the cold, I hear this horrible screaming coming from my rear brakes and it sounds like my chassis is going to tear itself in half! When I say this is loud I mean it, neighbours can hear it.

I've had a look at the brakes and it all seems to be fine though... And once again this ONLY happens in reverse. Has anyone encountered this at all? It's doing my head in and I'm constantly embarrassed to back my car out without drawing a mob of attention.

Are the pads sticking to the disc after the handbrake has been released?

I planned to check that today but the wheel nuts have been done up with a rattle gun and I can't break them by hand. So I guess it will have to wait until I see my brother next (has a rattle gun)

Jebus how tight are they!!

It would be the first thing I check anyway. Moisture between the pad and disc can cause the pad to stick as it dries.

A quick test you could do is next time you park the car leave the handbrake off and then see if it still does it when you next drive it.

When I get to work tonight I'll leave the car in gear with the handbrake off and see if reverse barks at me. Then tomorrow I'll be at a friends and we can tackle the the brakes and see where the problem lies.

Have you tried backing off the grub screw a bit more?

Mine's done it for 5 years with 2 sets of rotors and 5 sets of pads. I just don't use them when there are people standing around.

Nanotech---you are probably aware of this but a good way to loosen wheel nuts that are overtight is to place the brace on the wheel nut in a horizontal position and stand on it and ease your weight down and they will normally loosen. Ensure you are supporting yourself on the guard or something in case it slips.

Sounds obvious, but often the obvious things are the last thing we try.

I had the same problem immediately after fitment of a set of Bendix Ultimate pads. No one seemd to know what the problem was, not the installer or even Bendix themselves. I put up with it for about a year and pulled the brakes to bits one day out of frustration. No anti-squeel goo on the back of the pads. Applied goo, problem solved. This may not be the solution to your problem, but it sounds horribly familiar. Good luck.
