Hi,
I recently bought a 200,000km old NA6, which I love driving, except that the rattling coming from the brakes is driving me nuts.
I've done a lot of searching and looking into pad rattling, but after having a look today, I think the problem is the callipers themselves. I was planning to use the anti squeel glue to glue the pads to the pistons etc, but found the previous owner had already done it.
The clunking also sounds like something a lot heavier than pads. I noticed that the calliper can actually flop around on its guide pins by quite a few mm.
I've never worked on a car with floating callipers before. Do these pins slide in bushes that need to get replaced when they get worn out? How much should the calliper rattle around? (as opposed to sliding nicely back and forth on the pins). Or do you just throw out the mount bracket part and get a brand new one?
Thanks for your help,
Paul
