Gidday all.
In the second week in January I'm heading from Melbourne (Brighton) to Thredbo and I'm hoping to tap into a wealth of local knowledge regarding the best route to take. It doesn't need to be the most direct route, but should be a nice drive and should also be sealed all the way.
My tentative plans at this stage include the following:
- Brighton to Alexandra (via Monash Hwy, Eastlink/Scoresby Fwy, Ringwood bypass, Maroondah Hwy)
- Alexandra to Eildon (via Skyline Rd)
- Eildon to Mansfield (via Jamieson)
- Mansfield to Oxley (via Whitfield)
- Oxley to Bright (via Myrtleford)
- Bright to Mount Beauty
- Mount Beauty to Kiera (via Kiera Valley Hwy)
- Kiera to Corryong (via Murray Valley hwy)
- Corryong to Thredbo (via Khancoban and the Alpine Way)
I would welcome any comment or suggestions.
Many thanks in advance...

Re: Help Wanted: Route from Brighton to Corryong (Vic)
Sounds like a great route!!!
Try and fit the Reefton Spur in. It runs from Warburton in a loop eventually coming around to Marysville, it's an amazing road.
Skyline Road is perhaps the best road I've dríven in my life. Jamieson and a lot of the other roads around that area are also fantastic. There is one (i can't remember the name) which is was unsealed for about 10km when I went through a few months ago, they were working on it then though so that may no longer be the case.
Take a detour and do a run up and down Mt Buller if you have the time as it is well worth it, if Skyline road isn't the best I've dríven then it's probably Mount Buller.

Thanks for the tips Ben.
I can't claim credit for part of the route through Alexandra, Eildon, Jamieson and Whitfield as it was part of the Targa High Country course; on that basis I figured the roads should be OK!
I've read a few reports of the trip along the Reefton spur and will try to figure a way to include it.

enough's a feast. In my view that would be quite enough for one day- in fact maybe too much. A stop over would be a thought like in Mt Beauty. The main coffee shop in Mt Beauty is good and the Kiewa Vally drive is very pleasant- wonderful country. The drive past Tallangatta and on to Corryong is also first class and the water looks a treat. Bright is going to be busy- you might get a chance for a beer at the Bright Micro Brewery. Many of these roads are brilliant for an MX5- great scenery- often quiet and with variety.

Agreed; it would be a big day's drive all the way to Thredbo!
We do plan to stop over somewhere, just depends on how we're going; perhaps overnight at Bright.
I'm starting to look forward to this, it's going to be great to see some new scenery! Only problem being I won't be in the 5, or the 911.
