New or Machined Rotors.. much difference??

Postby Dweezle » Fri Nov 12, 2010 10:43 am

I have a brand new set of HAwk HP+ pads to go on my NA.

I was planning on getting DBA Slotted Rotors up front and new standard ones for the rear.
Which is the setup i had on my previous NA.

$$ being a little tight this time of year, would it be much of a difference just machining the Standard Rotors on the car now?

All my Googling i read about it seems to not really be very clear.

Any help much appreciated!!!

If the rotors can be machined without going under the minimum thickness it will be fine. I have run slotted and non slotted rotors on my car, on the road or track I have not experienced any noticeable difference in performance.

Good pad choice BTW.

Thanks guys..

I'll check the manual and the rotors tonight..

Hopefully this Can save me a few hundred bucks and not cost me much in the way of performance.

Can't wait to try these..

Dweezle, I've been running Hawker HP+ front and rear pads on DBA and cheapo rotors for a couple of years. Both cheap and exxy rotors work equally well. HP+s seem to be very easy on rotors - I've used 3 sets up front on the same rotors without noticeable rotor wear.

You need to bed them in the first time onto either new or machined rotors so they lay their own boundary layer over clean metal. If you're machining them you should check first for a min thickness stamp on them somewhere. After that you can replace worn HP+s with new HP+s without machining, providing the rotor is still in good condition, and you'll find they bed in almost immediately.

20mm is the minimum thickness on a std front NA8 rotor.

new rda slotted rotors (22mm thick) vs old 200,000km old std rotors (20mm thick)

bigger ventilation was a added bonus for me when buying new slotted rotors.
