Oil Filter Relocation Kit????

After doing an oil service last weekend, I'm sick of the oil dribble caused when removing the oil filter.

Anyone have an filter relocation kit fitted to their car?

Where would you mount the thing on a RHD NA???

I don't think removing the brake booser would be a good idea! :mrgreen:

I would mount it up front where the 200sx etc have there intercoolers mounted
to the side of the radiator

mine will be out the front with the rest of the cooling gang though!! hehe

my car came with an oil cooler and relocated oil filter inside the front grill next to the radiator, it still makes a mess with oil running over the inside of the bumper.

It takes a bit of fabrication, but gee it makes the changes easy

Yes, just two pieces of flat 6mm steel welded into an inverted "T" with 3 holes in the base for the metal screws that were supplied in the kit.

The difficult bit of the install was that there was no thread in the fitting to go onto the block. The plug tap to suit cost $70 :shock:

, so if anyone wants a loan just ask (very costly for just one thread).

Oh yeah, the fittings on the filter housing were also swapped to elbows to clear the bonnet.

rocket industries sell a kit,

me personally, ill put up with the slighyly awkward nature of filter removal and save the extra weight of the reloc kit. (it is a few kilos)

the 5 isnt that bad at all, compared to some cars.

Kula, this is the Rocket kit which weighs in at 840g (including the bracket, fittings & hoses). It's dyecast aluminium and is very light.

The main reason I decided to do it was with the added fuel rail and injectors (motor is turbo'd) the access was even further restricted.

Good investment at $105 for the clean freaks that hate the "dreaded dribble".

They look like two right angle bends at the filter - what will that do to flow rates, especially when the oil iscold?

Any of our boffins have a view on that?

Apart from costing around $850 before shipping and duty, all the JDM remote mount oil filter and oil cooler kits are for the NA6/8 only, unless you go to one of the smaller specialist MX5 tuners.

Tuckin99 sell a kit for all MX5's at a comparatively reasonable $620 but it looks like it's pretty poor quality, I've seen Item these oil cooler kits on ebay for just $250!! The lines and fittings look like bathroom items!! :shock:

Does anybody know what would need to be changed to fit the NA8 kit to an NB8?

This is the setup on my car. It was on the car when I bought it, the kit is from MX5 parts UK.
The location sucks and makes a mess when changing filters. For the new car I'm building I'm giving the relocation kit a miss and just having a take off plate for an oil cooler.

Hmm I've got my strut brace right there. I think the only option I might have is to remove the charcol canister

My oil filter is relocated to down beside the gearbox. It bolts to the side of the gearbox, and fits up between g'box and transmission tunnel, out of harms way. I don't have a photo of it that I can post unfortunately. I had it custom made by MX5Plus - Danny has a similar setup on his RX8, as per pics in his Renesis engined NC garage thread on page 28 - viewtopic.php?f=57&t=30796&start=405

Makes the filter change very easy, and drains straight into the oil tray at the same time as the sump oil does

I'll also go out on a limb and say that with it being down beside the gearbox, could potentially give some cooling benefit to the oil which an under bonnet relocation kit wouldn't be able to match due to air flow around the filter.
