NSW: Run to Mount Panorama, Bathurst via Blue Mountains.

Postby hethro87 » Sat Oct 23, 2010 10:40 am

Hey guys,

As the title suggests lets organise an informal group run up to Mount Panorama in Bathurst via the Blue Mountains!

Meet 8am for 830am take off at the Caltex service station west bound on the M4. Ie not as though you are driving into the city.

Date To be confirmed but most likely a weekend in Feb.

RSVP No need just show some interest and rock up on the day.

What to bring/Rules Yourself and a friend if you have any, full tank of fuel, iPod for some tunes, roof down if you wish, camera for some pictures and a good friendly spirit and dont do anything that can get you in trouble on the road.

Contacts Myself, Alexander Hetherington, if needed via the forum or on mobile (PM if you need that).

Information Plan is to meet up, have a coffee and a general chat and then blast up through the Blue Mountains and stop somewhere nice for a early lunch or late breakfast. Anybody whom knows any nice places are more than welcome to suggest and we can make a booking if need be. After that hit the road again and go to the spiritual birthplace of motorsport in Australia, Mount Panorama in Bathurst.

We can do a few cruise laps around the track, get some photos if the shutter bugs with the DSLR's want to put their hands up for that and pop into the Australian Motorsport museum which is next door to the track before heading home.

I'm in mate - always wanted to go to Bathurst with our pocket rockets.

Any idea how long the trip would be? (i.e. when should we be expecting to get back to Sydney).

Hey guys,

Fantastic feedback so far!

The drive from Sydney to Bathrust is aprox 2 hours and 40mins from Penrith. So as for coming home time depends how long we spend at the Motor museum?!

Have a great weekend,

I can help with extensive local knowledge for alternatives to the highway between Lithgow and Bathurst. It all depends on how much time you'll have and how far you'd like to drive.

Let me know if I can help.

Tentatively in, pending a firm date.

I did this a couple of months back... DEFINITELY worth the trip.

A detour through Oberon / Jenolan Caves is a must for doing this drive.

Could be up for this, I would probably suggest BLoR to Lithgow, as the highway can be a bit boring, an lots of roadworks.

Also have to be careful of the point to point cameras between Lithgow and Bathurst.

Hey guys,

Great to see even more feedback!

Dates well as posted sometime in Feb - weekend.

As for the run through Oberon etc, why not!

You should consider corresponding with Tony who lives in the Central Tablelands  and knows all the MX-5 roads including roads not always shown on maps far better than me. :)

The Jenolan Caves/Oberon Road and Oberon/Bathurst Road are regularly patrolled though less than the Great Western Highway and Mt Panorama from my observations. The later the run the more police and bounty hunter presence to ruin your day. South of the highway there is a smorgasbord of sealed “B” & “C” roads where police only go on a call out that can get you to Bathurst away from the “A” roads. 8)

Everyone knows the Tarana to O’Connell road however you can traverse the region finishing at Bathurst going through villages and localities such as Hampden, Lowes Mount, Hazelgrove, Wisemans Creek and The Lagoon for example. For the more adventurous go further south from Oberon to Mt David then up to Rockley on the way to the Mountain. These are only some of the options Tony might identify for your consideration subject to your schedule and the heat of the midday sun.

We plan a three day tour of the Central Tablelands, Slopes and Plains in late Spring 2011 and feedback from your run should help with the route choice etc. :D
