Re: 500hp
for that type of power u need to make ur budget so much bigger.
lsx conversion would be atleast a whole lot more then the 10k u have.. maybe want to tripple it
turbo conversion would be at least 10k with all the supporting mods ie. engine, drivetrain and cooling.
it seems like u need to make a decision if u still want that much power.

Here is a video of a 300hp MX-5:

I can't imagine what more you would possibly do with another 200hp on top of that!

Re: 500hp
You need to be thinking beyond just the engine bay. Sure you can throw money at the engine and get big power but have you thought about the clutch, transmission, suspension, brakes, tyres, oil and water cooling?

Re: 500hp
whats a troll thread?
i had always thought an LSx conversion would be over 30k ?
and can they be road legal ?
i also couldnt find a place that would do that conversion into a mx5 in melbourne or any other states.
i like the negativity in this post just makes me want to attain it

Re: 500hp
500hp in a Miata? That's 375kW in an MX-5 for all the Aussies out there. Do you have any idea what that'd do in an MX-5? Few MX-5 owners would have the skills to cope with 200kW and you want nearly double that?
Assuming you're talking flywheel and not wheel hp, that's a weight/power ratio of around 2.7kg/kW (1000kg kerb weight), which is in the territory of V8 Supercars, Porsche GT1, McLaren F1, Ferrari Enzo and Bugatti Veyron! A quarter mile would be done in around 11-12s and 100km/hr in around 4.0-4.5s. Do you honestly think you have the experience and skill to cope with that?
Yes you could put in a V8 crate engine and bolt a supercharger on it - you'd get 375kW easily. But with more than four times the power that the NA was designed for, you'd need to replace the entire driveline and possibly the subframe too, not to mention brakes. Virtually reengineering the entire car and I imagine it'd easily cost well over $50k to get it road registered. Finding a reputable workshop to do it for you would be next to impossible - none would take it on with the offer of a measly $10k. Build the monster yourself in the backyard and keep it unregistered to tow to the dragstrip, and you might ... MIGHT ... get away with a $30k budget. But honestly, I think you're better off seeking advice from the dragstrip crowd if you chose this approach.
You can call this "negativity" all you like. But you are getting the honest advice of many very experienced MX-5 owners (and some who're fairly new to MX-5s, like myself).

Re: 500hp
I agree with everything Guran has said.
Just have a quick think about what you are asking from a 1.6l engine if you plan to strap a 'big turbo' on.
500hp (at the fly) equates to 312.5hp/l.
This is the equivalent of asking for 1875hp from a Commodore 6L V8 (for the record, a stock commodore v8 produces 362hp).
Im not saying it can't be done. But its not going to be a cheap exercise.
I wish you the best of luck if you do try to reach 500hp, it'll certainly be a unique car if you can keep it on the road.

Re: 500hp
if you have 500hp in an NA6 your driveline to handle the power will cost quite a bit more than 10k for starters.
like everyone here has said the easiest way to make that sort of hp is the an ls conversion.
if you want it with factory reliability then you will need to use an ls7 or ls9. which i assume crate motors will be more than your budget without the kit to fit them.
if you stay with the bp powerplant 10k will cover your computer, tuning and trouble shooting budget without the motor and chassi improvements needed to handle the power
Above the driveline to handle it and tuning of that power your engine will need to be built to handle the power. I expect the bottom end with a 2L stroker crank will cost probably more than 10k. Not to mention the head you will need to build to flow that much hp. brakes, wheels and tyres have not even been considered amoungst the many other things you will need to do.
to put it this way I have dropped over 20k on my car and I have about 210whp and I am still on a stock motor.
I think your goal has been pre determined based on a figure not what you want the car to do.
you need to understand what you want the car to do and build it for that.
this guy has a claimed 500hp. http://www.youtube.com/verify_age?next_ ... UFAvMOFI6c
ask him.
I suspect your mates have payed you out about having a girls car and you want to show them up.
do what I did, learn how to drive and take them for a drive in the mountains. I bet they will sh*t their pants and want to buy one.
