Non R Spec Tyres for track days

I checked Tire Rack and they don't stock RE-11 or R1R in 14" (only Star Specs at US$96 each - good price!). I don't know where to start with Japanese suppliers. Any suggestions for either?

Bridgestone in the USA doesn't bring in the RE-11 in 14" unfortunately.

I've mentioned it in a previous thread, but it's probably worth mentioning again here.

It's been my experience on a number of occasions that not all available tyre sizes are listed on the manufacturer's web site. Just because it is not listed doesn't necessarily mean that it is not available.

Try and find one of the company's Master Dealers and give them a call. It's worked for me!

was down @ meridian adding to my sensor collection today and found this brochure - it clearly marks the toyo trampio R1R as marketed in australia as a motorsport tyre. Hmmmpf.

Thanks to Bryan for pointing me in the direction of this thread, I have a few small questions now.

Recently I purchased some 6ul wheels with Toyo R1R tyres, from the information I can gather they are good on the track but heat up fast and have a 140 wear rating which is rather low.

My issue is now I have 2 sets of tyres, both 205/50 r15 in size, but I have star specs and the r1r.

Should I keep my starspecs for track use, because they appear faster, although I would be using a 140 rating tyre over a 200 for street purpose. My street driving is usually only 50-100km a week now (4km from work)

The R1R seem great in the wet, but the Star spec seems superior in the dry.

Any tips?

At the moment, i'm leaning towards r1r daily and star specs track.

Use the R1Rs on the street and chew them up and be rid of them. Then purchase a good tyre to use on the street.

Thanks champ for the feedback, I now fully intend to run the R1R on the street, once they fail i'll grab some nice rubber!

The MX-5 Club of Victoria recently revised their championship rules regarding what constitutes "road tyres" versus "R Compound Tyres". This is what they've settled upon for the 2012/13 season.

Apparently the Federal 595RS-R and Yokohama AD08 tyres were queried for potential inclusion in the road tyres list, but it was decided that they qualify as R-specs.

How does the Falken RT 615 qualify as an R Compound? they were average street tyres years ago.

Not sure i understand the R1R hate either, IMO they are a damn good for a sticky tyre thats handles the wet or dry.

MR2 = rear weight bias, typically a recipe for big oversteer. That pic suggests a huge front roll stiffness (look how little droop there is), which would have been done to minimise the weight transfer at the back end and maintain traction.
