Don't seem to be permissible in Victoria
Have a read of the Motorsport Rules 2010-2011 Rule 3.5
There is also the following clause
The list below is not definitive; please contact the Club Captain for a ruling on any tyre that may fall into this category.

The Toyo Proxes R1R is not an R-spec tyre and has a different tread compound and construction compared to the Proxes R888.
It is close to an R-spec tyre regarding grip levels.

Well I decided to go with the R1R's for the follow couple of reasons.

I wanted 205's and couldn't get them in the Star Specs
These tyres will be used on the street as well as the track and I am told are much better than the KU36 in the wet (although not quite as good in the dry)

The R1R's were great on the GOR now to find out how they go on the track on Sunday.

I have seen some very fast times done on Proxes R1R.
Interested to hear your feedback.
Hot pressures should be no more than 34psi

The link to the Proxes R1R is towards the bottm right of the home page. It works for me, and goes straight to the product information page.
There is nothing new, this tyre has been available for some time now.

Thanks for the tip Steve. The boys at Hastings Tyerpower suggested starting around 28-30 PSI cold so it sounds like they are on the money. I don't know how much pressure increase I'll get in 15 minutes but will certainly be checking and having a play.

Hi Guys,
Just wanted to clarify a few things from the Victorian club around road tyres

Anything marketed as a road going high performance tyre is classified as a road tyre.

In our Rules, we have a 5 year old list that is used as a recomendation alongside the above ruling about how tyers are marketed. Listed in our rules as an R spec is the Toyo Trampio R1R. Not the Proxes R1R. The Trampio is no longer available from what we can see but was used in semi slick applications in it's day.

I've been privillaged enough to have a good look at 4 of the brands suitable for classes where R spec tyres are forbidden. Three years ago, the Bridgstones were the ones to have but since then I believe both the Khumo's and the Dunlops are now the choice. The only down side with the dunlops is that they aren't available in 205's for standard wheels. I was astounded at the solid lateral grip of the Khumos compared with what I'm on. I would have bought these if there wasn't a 6 week wait at the time of purchase.

Because of that, I went for the cheaper and obviously more contriversial :? Proxes R1R. I must say that in a straight line in the wet I think they are amazing but the lateral grip is a bit light on. I think their biggest let down is their ability to stay on song for any amount of time. I have found this with all Toyo's I have used. The R1R gets about 2 hot flying laps before they fall away. 2 laps later you might as well come in as it is more like ice skating. This is fun but not very fast.

I will be purchasing the khumos next time around. I love how cheap road tyres are compared to the R Specs.

Only saving grace is I don't think I'll be going around corners quite as fast as you so they might not go off so quickly

Mark, you haven't made a bad choice. From a time perspective, I'm really only talking about a couple of points of a second per lap at max while they are on song.

In strategic planning of the one perfect lap, one would try and align all the factors. Your position in the field from the pits, tyre temperature, tyre pressure, the temperature of the day, the traffic, your headspace and probably 1000 other factors. They all have windows of best performance. Once a driver is driving well, learning to align the windows is the hard bit. I think no-one gets all the windows lined up but it's fun trying.

The reality is that most of us destroy several sets of tyres before driving well AND aligning the windows. This new set of tyres is just another exciting step toward your formula 1 career.

I have a few mate that use R1Rs for both street and track. They complain about loosing grip levels after 5000km as the compound craps itself thru heat cycling. Most get 10,000km for total tyre life.

Interesting :? My R1Rs have done 13,000km and have no loss of grip - unfortunately though, the inside edge of the front right is badly worn from too many right turns at local tracks and not enough attention by me to tyre rotation. :roll: The rears are fine, so I'll have to replace the fronts long before they should have been due.
