Just north of Melbourne Hurstbridge to Kinglake

Postby Jitag » Tue Sep 14, 2010 10:20 am

I needed to escape from a house full of young party survivors on Sunday afternoon, but just for an hour or so, therefore I couldn't go too far. The road from Hurstbridge to St Andrews is priceless. 80 kmh speed limit and lots of twists and turns, with a few short straights AND NO OTHER CARS IN THE WAY! Not many cars could keep to 80 kmh, but the MX5 lapped it up. Past St Andrews, to Kinglake is even twistier, but nearly always too busy, and the speed limit is 60 kmh for a great deal of it.

A little detour between Hurstbridge and St Andrews goes to Strathewen. The road is narrower, and the surface is not as good, but a great short trip all the same. Back home to the north-easrtern suburbs in an hour and a quarter.

Both Kinglake and Strathewen were severely affected by the bushfires, so if you are up that way, stop off and spend a few dollars. At Kinglake it is easy, with the Harvest Cafe, and a few other places, but you may have to search a bit in Strathewen, as there is not much there at all.

Good little road that, from kinglake back to hurstbridge there are definately a few corners you can't drive at 80 (on the right side of the road) though no matter what car your in!
There is also another good little road linking Hurstbridge and Yarrambat. I forget the name but its narrow, twisting and empty (bar the occasion cyclist! Be careful.)
Only issue out there is wildlife mainly, dawn and dusk are no good at all.

(PS. if you end up out that way, the drive from Kangaroo Ground out to Yarra glen is nice, and it's a warming sight to stop in and see how full sugarloaf reseviour is on the way!)
