Cost of vinyl wrap??

So I'm looking for a rough Idea of how much this work costs and where I'd get it done. So far i'm looking at just doing the hardtop in a vinyl matte finish but posibilities are endless with this stuff. notice the glossy white bmw? Looks like a factory colour but it's an adhesive wrap!!! And from research I've found that you can simply take this stuff off with a bit of mucking around if you decide you dont' want it anymore and go back to your original paint.
All the benefits of a respray with none of the headache and from what I've read it's a hell of a lot cheaper.

But that said, the question still lays: How much and where?

MOTOR magazine were just about to have this done to their longterm loaned Evo X. Until the car was broken into by thieves at the Sydney airport "secure" parking station. The car is now going back to Mitsubishi and there's no word on whether they'll be trying the matt vinyl on something else.

But why not DIY? The film apparently costs around $64 per metre. Can't be too hard to apply it, right?! :shock:

I don't know about price but a guy atr work just had his Monaro done in an ACDC theme with lightning ans sh*t. It is from the creases in the doors down and on the front bar and rear bar and back of the hatch. It looks unreal and if it is only around 2.5k it's cheap. I would hate to think what all that airbrushing would cost.

its about $150 to do your bonnet.. in carbon fibre viynl (this is from memory)

So its roughly the price of a cheap backyard paintjob.

Most tinters should be able to do this job, if they cannot supply it and you can they should be able to fix you up. Your in Victoria from what i can see, if you cant find anyone and your REALLYYY DEDICATED you can drive up to SYDNEY as i know more than 1 place here that definately does do it.

I've only done it once, its quiet good, cause its thick, stronger protects your paint in a way, very nice end easy to wash, nothign sticks it to it like glue. It APPEARANTLY stops heat from coming in.. it looks better, overall protects from Rust.

Hey thanks for the reply. Guess I don't really need to do this anymore. Ended up doing the backyard spray job. My brother is a painter by trade so I did the prep work and supplied the paint and he did all the spraying. looks great and can't complain. Surprisingly cheaper than vinyl wrap too.
Though I went gloss black. I do think that the vinyl matte finish looks better than paint because it doesn't come out looking like cheap primer.

I wrapped my whole MX-5 NC in CF wrap.

Did the same to a GTR in Satin Black wrap.

Results are amazing. See comparison of factory gloss black paint to satin black vinyl.

Vinyl withstands scratches better than matte paint. Also easier to maintain.

Is this vinyl wrapping clear coat friendly? What does it do to the real paint? Will it discolour the paint or damage the clear coat when finally removing the vinyl wrapping? In particular if the vinyl wrap is left on for years.

Some facts about vinyl wrapping.....

Vinyl is clear-coat friendly. No damage to real paint unless the paint is flakey, in which case removing the vinyl could lift the already loose paint. No discolouration what-so-ever.

Vinyl wrap is 100% reversible. Removal within a couple of years will require minimal efforts. This is because the vinyl has not had much exposure to UV-damage. Each piece of vinyl should come off in several sections. There should be no residue as the adhesive substance stays on the vinyl.
Removal after 4-5 years will involve more time as UV exposure would make the film more brittle. It will rip off in more pieces. Minimal residue might occur but prepsol (wax & grease remover) should wipe it off easily without scrubbing.

Cleaning is easy. Hand wash (bucket, sponge and chamois with regular products) is recommended. "Wash & wax 2-in-1" detergents are ideal. Wax/polish/buff are neither necessary nor recommended.
I have been using a light-pressured Kärcher to wash and rinse my MX-5 since it was first wrapped, blasting the hell out of it every week. Just to put it through the test, against the manufacturer's recommendations. They advised that this could degrade the texture (carbon fibre was used on our car). I have found no issues or changes so far and will continue with this. No edges have lifted as they were all wrapped around to the back of each panel (a bennefit of wrapping after stripping the car first).

There are also various brands and grades of vinyl, with various longevity and prices. In general, you get what you pay for.

I removed the CF vinyl on a MINI Cooper Turbo and the paint surface was clean and not even sticky. The adhesive substance on the vinyl stayed on the vinyl. There was no need to wash the roof after the vinyl removal.

It is truly amazing stuff.
